Stroll, Roll For Rett

Fundraiser fights tragic illness.

0

n Sunday, May 2, the sec-
ond annual "Stroll and Roll
for Rett" will raise funds
for medical research to fight crip-
pling Rett Syndrome.
The event, also known as
"Michigan Rett
Strollathon," will
take place at Drake
Sports Park, south
of Maple Road
on the east side
of Drake in West
Bloomfield.
Registration is at
Rachel at 18
9:30 a.m. and the
walk begins at 10.
The walk is in memory of Rachel
Kopelman, a beloved sister, daughter,
granddaughter and friend.
Rachel, fondly remembered,
passed away 10 years ago at age
20. While she was born with Rett
Syndrome, she still managed to
touch the hearts of many.
Rett Syndrome (RTT), a brain
disorder affecting development in
childhood, affects almost exclusively

females. Its features
include the loss of
speech and pur-
poseful hand use
as well as abnor-
mal walking and
breathing.
No cure is
known, but in
2008, research-
ers heralded a
breakthrough by
reversing RTT
symptoms in
mouse models.
Rachel's parents, Sandy and Jeff
Kopelman of Franklin, and sis-
ter and brother-in-law, Lisa and
Aaron Fenberg of Commerce, have
organized the Strollathon to assist
Rett research. It is their hope with
enough money and research, that
there will one day be a cure for Rett
Syndrome.
For information about the
Strollathon or Rett Syndrome, visit the
Web site www.stroll4rett.com or call
Lisa Fenberg at (248) 242-6909. 17
