Closing The Gap
To Keinon, what the majority of
Obama administration officials and
the American public may not yet
fully appreciate is the fundamental
change among Israelis who sup-
ported the Oslo Accords only to be
met with violence in return.
"The Americans are locked into
this idea of land for peace; and
after 16 years of Oslo, after leav-
ing Lebanon and Gaza, we don't
believe that will work anymore,' said
Keinon, a Denver native who now
lives in Ma'ale Adumim with his wife
and four children.
In the meantime, Keinon said
Israel's supporters here should not
be alarmed by the changing politi-
cal dynamic and should keep in
mind that the relationship between
the countries and its citizens is
multifaceted with deep roots.
He did recommend that
American Jews adopt one of the
Israeli people's better traits: resil-
iency. It's a feature he rediscovered
while writing his first book Lone
Soldiers: Israel's Defenders from
Around the World, which chronicles
the experiences of several Jews who
left other countries to volunteer
with the Israel Defense Forces.
"It will be tough:' Keinon said
just hours after landing in New
York last week from a flight rerout-
ed to avoid the volcanic ash clouds
affecting Europe. "American Jews
don't want to see their government
beat up on Israel, but they don't
have to panic."

threat of terrorists acquiring nuclear
weapons at the recent international
nuclear summit in Washington D.C.,
mirrored those of Israel's representa-
tive there, Dan Meridor, the minister
for intelligence affairs.
And despite rampant speculation,
neither Obama nor Netanyahu has
publicly acknowledged American
demands for a settlement freeze as
a display of goodwill to Palestinians.
It's likely because neither has any-
thing to gain politically by doing so,
Keinon said, but that's still coopera-
tion.

Herb Keinon's talk event is
free, but reservations are
required by Monday, April 26.
They can be made by e-mail-
ing admin@mizoa.org or by
