Mural by Cantor David Montefiore depicts the Torah Umadda concept

B

'nai Moshe Men's Club Israel
Affairs Committee, B'nai
Moshe Adult Education
Committee and the Jewish National
Fund are sponsoring "Torah,
Technology and the Future of Israel"
on May 2, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. at
Congregation B'nai Moshe in West
Bloomfield. This free Lag b'Omer corn-
munity event will explore the relation-
ship of Torah values to the applications
of modern technology. There will be a
panel presentation with Steven Bekhor,
Ph.D., who will speak on "Israel's
Nuclear Horizon;" Ellen P. Rosenberg,
J.D., will present "Water Resources and
Conservation in Israel;" and Steven
H. Schwartz, J.D., will present "Torah
Values and the Environment" These
hot topics are vitally important to Israel
and its future.
The idea for the event stems from
Rabbi Aharon Soloveichik's concept

of Torah Umadda, meaning Torah and
secular knowledge. The concept is that
Jewish values learned through Torah
study should govern how modern
technology is ethically used.
The B'nai Moshe Choir will lead
the audience in Hatikvah and the
Star Spangled Banner and perform
one selection related to the theme for
the evening. There will be a ques-
tion-and-answer period followed by
a social hour with refreshments and
a chance to meet informally with
the presenters. The evening will be
further enhanced by a colorful acrylic-
painted mural created by Cantor David
Montefiore of Tucson, formerly can-
tor at Temple Beth El in Bloomfield
Township. The mural illustrates many
of the symbols depicting the Torah
Umadda concept.
Call the B'nai Moshe office, (248)
788-0600, to RSVP. ❑
