Not A Jewish Matter
Like many Catholics and non-Catholics
alike, I have been somewhat dismayed
by reports of substantial sexual abuse
of teenagers by members of the
Catholic clergy; I am sure that you
share this dismay, no doubt much more
so.
I became particularly disturbed
when Vatican official Rev. Raniero
Cantalamessa brought the Jewish
people into this completely internal
Catholic situation ("Anti-Semitic
Vatican Remarks," April 15, page 31).
I have been blessed to have spent
most of my adulthood admiring the
late Pope John Paul II, but I also real-
ize that one reason why this man was
so admired by the world Jewish com-
munity is the troubled co-existence
between the Catholic Church and the
Jewish people during most of the past
millennium.
I don't at all see the connection
raised on April 2 by Rev. Cantalamessa
between the legal,ethical andcriminal
questions being raised now and Jews
and the Jewish people.
Dark allusions to the "New York con-
spiracy" have a long and painful history.
The behavior of looking for conspira-
cies is often the last resort of the scoun-
drel and is not at all consistent with
the greatly improved Catholic-Jewish
relationship of the past generation.
The entire question of sexual abuse
concerns Catholic victims and Catholic
perpetrators; there is no role played by
Jews.

Hampton Memories
The article "Where The Heart Is" was
absolutely correct about the Hampton
School area in Detroit (April 1, page
42).
I lived for many years in a house on
the corner of Birchcrest and Pickford
with my husband, Sol Schwartz, and my
sons Larry, David and Michael.
It was a wonderful time living in this
neighborhood in the 1950s and 1960s.
It was the Jewish Leave It to Beaver area
and we were totally unaware at that
time of the uniqueness and ideality of
this neighborhood.

Missionary Pitch Strong
Has the expert giving advice to Ari
regarding "Jews for Jesus" (Ask the
Expert, April 8, page 41), had direct
experience with someone de-pro-
grammed from that cult? I suspect not

since I was not able to find any direct
response to Jews for Jesus on the rec-
ommended site.
I was targeted for years and filled
with doubt by an evangelical Christian
friend, but my doubts were erased by
a visit to www.jewsforjudaism.org/, a
site I found in an ad years ago in the
Jewish News. Jews for Judaism (JFJ)
was created by people who successfully
brought back Jews who were seduced
by Christian cults. I ordered its series
of 12 lectures, but simply reading the
Cliff's Notes-style online handbook
was enough to open my eyes to the
missionary's con. Ignoring Christianity
and immersion in Jewish life does not
insulate Jewish youth from the mis-
sionary pitch that has been polished for
2,000 years.
Can you explain to your child why
we reject Jesus? You don't need a degree
from a rabbinical school — just take
five minutes to read the JFJ handbook
(in the Library tab) and the FAQ
(Frequently Asked Questions) and you
will have no problem.

Tea Party Not Radical
Sometimes, we must be careful whom
we attack. In your article "Right-Wing
Extremism" (April 8, page 10), you
included the Tea Party along with oth-
ers as using "extreme rhetoric" that has
contributed to an environment that is
fostering "violence" from the extreme
right and multiple instances of domes-
tic terrorism. This is extreme rhetoric
in itself and lacks factual substance.
Being active Zionists, we have pur-
posely followed the Tea Party to evalu-
ate how it stands in relation to Israel
and Jews. At a Tea Party rally, one of
us has seen the flag of Israel displayed
next to the American flag. Sarah Palin,
the speaker in one case, was wearing
a pin with the flags of both countries.
Though there were vigorous attacks
on government policies, there was no
racial or religious rhetoric at the rallies.
The majority of Tea Party sup-
porters are long-term Republicans,
Independents and even former Obama
supporters. They represent a large seg-
ment of our population and should not
be needlessly attacked. The Tea Party
is focused on its domestic agenda and
has shown no inclination to attack Jews,
Israel or fostering extreme violence.
We must be careful not to find ene-
mies where they do not exist. We have a
plentiful real list of our own.
