Dan Weiner of

Rep. Cantor: Alsraers Security
Synonymous With Our Own'

West Bloomfield,

Virginia

BIRMINGHAM — Now is a critical time
in U.S.-Israel relations and the challenges
that have been posed by this administra-
tion, declared Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., the
U.S. House Minority Whip and one of
Israel's principal champions in Congress.
"It is imperative that we continue show-
ing bipartisan support to assist a strong
U.S.-Israel relationship and to posit the
case that Israel's security is synony-
mous with our own," he said following a
Michigan Republican Party (MRP) event
at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham.
MRP Finance Chairman Robert Schostak
hosted the gathering.
Cantor, the only Jewish Republican
in the U.S. House, went on to say, "The
American people fully support that Israel
is our ally. You must keep communicating
that to the Hill. We've been united behind
Israel in a bipartisan fashion as demon-
strated by our letter to the White House
in support of Israel, but we have a tough
job challenging the so-called linkage of
the Israel-Palestinian issue, whereby the

JERUSALEM/JTA —
Israel's prime minister
used his annual address
at Israel's national
Holocaust Remembrance
Day ceremony to warn
Prime Minister
about the dangers of a
Netanyahu
nuclear Iran.
"We are witness today
to the new-old fire of hate — hatred
of Jews inflamed by organizations and
regimes of extremist Islam, most of
all Iran and its satellites," Benjamin
Netanyahu said Sunday.
"Iran's leaders are rushing to develop
nuclear weapons and freely announce their
desire to destroy Israel, but before these
repeated declarations to wipe the Jewish
state from the face of the earth, at best we
hear faint protest and even this is fading','
he said. "We don't hear the forceful protest
that is required, we don't hear the strong
denouncement nor the angry voice."
The ceremony was held at the Yad
Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem.
Earlier Sunday, Israel Defense Forces
Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi said that
never again would the Jewish people lack
the means to defend themselves.
"We will never again be dependent on
the benevolence of others," Ashkenazi said.
"Never again will Jewish children be fear-
ful or begging for mercy. Never again will
an advocate of evil be able to dictate the

argument is made that if only that issue
can be resolved, all the world's problems
will be solved. And we know that's simply
not true."
Prior to the Townsend program, Cantor
spoke at a small, private gathering of pro-
Israel supporters.
The fifth-term congressman is the
second most powerful Republican in
the House after Minority Leader John
Boehner of Ohio. Cantor is a member of
the House Ways and Means Committee
and chairs the Congressional Task Force
on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare.
When asked following the Townsend
program if the mysteriously diverted bun-
ker buster bombs that were to be shipped
to Israel from the U.S. will ever make it
to Israel, the congressman shrugged his
shoulders and replied, "Don't know."
Regarding Iran's nuclear quest, he said:
"We should have passed the Iran sanc-
tions bill a year ago. We're now awaiting the
finalized version of the House and Senate
measures. We must show unity that we will
not allow Iran to become nuclear. We must
leave every option on the table."

future of the Jewish people. In the name
of my father and his family who fought for
a sovereign and independent state, and in
the name of the millions who were unable
to witness the realization of their dream, I
stand here today as the commander of the
Hebrew defense force, the Israel Defense
Forces."
U.S. Rep. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield
Township, said Monday: "Yom HaShoah is
more than a day for solemn remembrance;
it is a call to action, a day to say, 'Never
Again' I stand with the Jewish people in
its effort against genocide everywhere and
I stand with Israel in its struggle for secu-
rity against threats to the Jewish state."

Nuclear Summit
WASHINGTON/JTA — President Obama
and Jordan's King Abdullah discussed
Iran's nuclear program during a bilateral
meeting.
At the meeting Monday, part of the
two-day Nuclear Security Summit,
the two leaders agreed on the impor-
tance of strengthening the Nuclear
Nonproliferation Treaty. Obama stressed
the importance of international efforts,
such as sanctions, to pressure Iran, while
Abdullah argued for resolving the issue
through diplomatic avenues.
The two also discussed how to advance
Israeli-Palestinian and Israeli-Arab peace,
elections in Iraq and Jordan's efforts to
improve conditions for the people of
Afghanistan.
