At the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Beth El 10th-graders Kenny Selander, Ben Lambert, Lana Stern, Jared Monchnik, Hannah Eisenstein, Samantha Jahr, Rachel Pernick and Alec Goldsmith find their places in a sculpture depicting a soup kitchen tine. T his year, for the first time, a group of cognitively impaired students who receive special education resources and support joined the rest of the 10th-graders from Temple Beth El on a weekend trip to Washington, D.C., in mid-March. The 15 students, accompanied by three staff members and a parent chaperone, made the trip as part of their preparation for their confir- mation this year at the Bloomfield Township synagogue. The trip focused on the theme of being Jewish baderekh, on the path, or as you go. The students found many opportuni- ties to consider what it meant to live Jewishly — in the moment. As the group rode Washington's Metro transit system, they considered Jewish values of patience, safety and respect. As the students prayed, they discussed the central v'ahavta (part of the Shema) prayer and its message of being Jewish baderekh. As the students lived together for a weekend, all the students learned many lessons about community, love and togetherness. Both groups were touched by the experience of spend- ing real quality time with their peers. Beth El participates in the Opening the Doors program of Federation's Alliance for Jewish Education. The program offers subsidized special education resources for religious school students through sixth-grade. Although this program is not avail- able to Beth El for Monday night school (seventh grade and up), Beth El continues to offer these youngsters with special needs a way to be part of a community of Jewish learning. Beth El hopes to continue such inclusive programming in the future. Highlights of the group's trip includ- ed a visit with U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D- Detroit, a tour of the Capitol, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Spy Museum and havdalah at the Jefferson Memorial, where they practiced their First Amendment Rights of freedom of religion, freedom of speech and free- dom of assembly as delineated in the Bill of Rights, which they saw earlier that morning). Our Mission Our mission is to develop and maintain banking relationships with customers who truly value exceptional service. We believe that there's a need for a real community bank in Oakland County – a bank where the directors, shareholders, and employees all live in the same area as our customers. We've created a bank where customers can come in at any time and talk face to face with the people who make decisions, not get forwarded to bureaucratic loan committees in remote locations.
