Metro AROUND TOWN Pizza Bake-Off! Young adults battle for bragging rights in the kitchen. Marla Young of West Bloomfield and Lindsey Maddin of Huntington Woods T hey were tossing dough like pros and cooking up all kinds of creative ideas in the kitchen at Specialties Showroom in Berkley during an "Iron Chef" pizza-baking competition sponsored by the Young Adult Division (YAD) of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. About 40 young "chefs in training" rolled up their sleeves and rolled out pizza dough April 8. They were given various ingredients, including cheese, tomatoes, garlic, herbs and spices, but no sauce. The group was instructed to use their imaginations and think "outside the box." Dorothy Barak of West Bloomfield, one of the owners of the kitchen appliance and plumbing store, helped them get started. "Before they begin, we give them some basic culinary tips: how to properly hold a knife, how to chop vegetables:' Barak said. "Then they break up into teams and start cooking. Everything was kosher." There was a 45-minute limit to prepare and bake the pizza. Jessica Goodman of Southfield and Lindsay Steingold of Royal Oak In the end, some unique pies came out of the oven. Some had happy faces; some were colored yellow and shaped like the sun. But the winning creation was a thin-crust margarita pizza. "They all came up with very creative ideas:' said Jessica Goodwin of Southfield, a YAD campaign associate. "We had one team making their own pesto. We had one team grilling pineapples. Another group was using food coloring." Prizes were given out in various categories, including best-tasting pizza and most creative. The winning team got pizza cutters. Other winners took home spatulas. Everyone who participated went home with a small container of olive oil. The pur- pose of the event was to thank donors who have given a gift of $365 or more to Federation's Annual Campaign. "I think this was one of the most fun events we've had:' said YAD director Jennifer Levine of Pleasant Ridge. "Everyone had a really great time!" Spotted in the crowd were event co-chairs Lindsey Maddin of Huntington Woods and Marla Tapper Young of West Bloomfield; Michele Rosenblum, liana Liss and David Kramer, all of Birmingham; Shayna Levine of Huntingon Woods; Lindsay Steingold and Jared Goldman, both of Royal Oak; and Hy Safran of Franklin. ❑ Shana Levine of Huntington Woods and Daniel Schwartz of Bloomfield Hills, Rob Jared Goldman and Aaron Tlumak, both liana Liss of Birmingham Stern of Oak Park and Brian Young of of Royal Oak West Bloomfield 16 5 2 Traci and Dustin Feldman of Birmingham
