The show is held collaboratively with Gilda's Club Metro Detroit, where many Karmanos patients, including Melkus, find support. A special art- ists' reception takes place 1-4 p.m. Thursday, April 15, at Karmanos. Melkus has always been drawn to the creative fields. Prior to retir- ing, she worked in her family retail fashion business, collaborating with clothing designers. In her younger years, she dabbled in creative writ- ing. She's also a longtime piano player and has taught transcendental meditation. But a talent for colored pencil drawing was totally new to her. "It's just strange she said of her newfound talents."But it's also so cool. I just can't tell you how art has enhanced my life. It's very astonishing." Today, Melkus belongs to the Colored Pencil Society of America and has participated in the society's art shows. She's also done several pet portrait commissions. "I love giving the finished portrait to the person who commissioned it and seeing their reaction:' she said. Amid her artwork, Melkus is man- aging GVHD well with medication. She sees a physical therapist and her Karmanos oncologist, Dr. Joseph Uberti. Melkus said art has been a huge part of her ongoing therapy. Instructor Duke, a cancer survivor herself, said the classes at Karmanos are hugely popular. "You get a sense of tranquility from doing something creative said Duke, who has taught the drawing class at Karmanos for almost five years and also encourages Karmanos patients to attend the classes she teaches at Gilda's Club in Royal Oak. "Just the rhythmic movement of your hand is very relaxing. It opens up new doors for people Duke said. 7 Elizabeth A.
