Successful Despite Adversit

L

osing the use of an arm after
cancer surgery at the age of
29, Nancy Meyer didn't call it a
handicap and wouldn't let it get in the
way of a 28-year career as a social worker
at Kingswood Hospital, a psychiatric
facility in Ferndale.
"In fact:' said her sister, Peggy Frank

She told them: 'Look at me. I have this
bad arm and I was able to have a suc-
cessful career, so you also can overcome
obstacles and be successful: She even let
them touch her non-functioning arm to
experience what it was like.
"Nancy never had a 9-5 job there. She
arrived early and stayed late. The kids
always came first and she was great with
them — using her wonderful sense of
humor. The nurses said she was a 'real kick:"
