for college students by college students realizations: Having parents who read to us at bedtime, helped with our homework and provided resources for us to grow educationally, we have always known the importance of schooling. Most of the children we spent time with lacked this guid- ance and often are forced to choose between their educations and succumbing to other pressures we simply do not encounter. Seeing and hearing about these harsh realities opened our eyes to just how fortu- nate we really are. It is now, when we are able-bodied and eager to positively affect the world, that we truly made a difference in Miami. And while some of us may not have been prepared for the experiences we encountered, we came away with a newfound per- spective of our own lives and surroundings. Some of us may begin volunteering at local food banks; others may strike up conversations with homeless people who sometimes pass by our apartments. What is important is that we took something, however big or small it may be, away from our time with the underprivileged in Miami.
