became the
president of Hebrew Free Loan in
1993, the first woman to do so. "I've
been proud to work with HFL in
every capacity," Marlene said. "Our
Board has always been a wonderful
group of people dedicated to the
welfare of the Jewish community. I
was one leader among others, of an
amazing organization with a long
history of doing good work. HFL is
our area's oldest agency, and I'm
pleased to say we celebrated 115
years of service this past October."
Although she was not attempting
to break barriers as president,
Marlene was able to focus some
attention on poverty as a woman's
issue, and help shape some of HFL's
lending policies to better help
women in need.
"As an individual, I led a sheltered
and decent life, and doors were never
closed to me," Marlene said. "As an
HFL Board member, I have been
exposed to the many ways doors
can slam shut on people who have
done nothing but play by the rules
throughout their lives, and who need
help to get past a reversal of fortune."
