Fine Art Appraisers and Auctioneers — Since 19'27

ground," says Silverman. "He told
me that eBay was exploding inter-
nationally and needed help to run
it overseas. It sounded like fun, so I
joined eBay with the understanding
that they could send me anywhere
in the world — and I ended up in
the Netherlands. I launched eBay's
European online classifieds busi-
ness."
Another of Ebay's products
was Skype. "When the Skype job
became available, I grabbed it with
both hands," Silverman says. "I
think it's the best job in the world."
Last year, Silverman — who cel-
ebrated his bar mitzvah at Temple
Beth Emeth in Ann Arbor, where his
parents, Alida and Eugene Silverman,
are still members — spoke at the
second Israeli Facing Tomorrow
Conference in Jerusalem. Hosted
by Israeli President Shimon Peres,
its purpose was to look at creating a
better future for Israel and Jews.
"It was, of course, a great privi-
lege to be invited by President Peres
to speak at his conference," says
Silverman. "And it was a great thrill
to take a question from [sex guru]
Dr. Ruth Westheimer herself."
Silverman hasn't been back to
Ann Arbor in a few years. However,
because of Skype, his wife, Shirin,
and their two children, Leila, 5, and
Dara, 21/2, are able to stay connected
to family back in the States. "My
daughter Leila is perfectly capable
of using [Skype] all by herself,"
laughs Silverman. "We will come
down and see her on the computer
trying to Skype with her grandpar-
ents abroad."
Silverman and his wife have
decided to raise their children in
a multicultural way — embracing
both his Jewish and her Persian cul-
ture. "It's very important to me that
my kids have a sense of their Jewish
identity," he says. "I want them to
appreciate Jewish traditions, which
includes celebrating the High Holy
Days and Passover."
When asked what makes him
the most proud, Silverman quickly
responds: "Skype. It's very rare to
find a business that has such a social
component to it, bringing people
together across great distances. And
Skype does just that."
