eginning Thursday evening,
April 22, the men of Temple
Israel will take a leap of
faith into the seldom-explored area of
men's spirituality at the first meeting
of ACHIM (brothers).
While women and women's groups
— including a women's spirituality cir-
cle at Temple Israel — more easily delve
into the sharing and exploration of feel-
ings, emotions, struggles and ambitions,
the men, until now, have focused their
energies on other worthwhile projects.
Brotherhood members agree that it
is time for men to add a new project
— their spirituality. It is time to have
a place to bond in friendship through
spiritual exploration.
The purpose of ACHIM is to explore
issues common to all men, using
Jewish music and literature. In April,
ACHIM will explore "Fathers & Sons."
In May, it will explore "Lose
"I think this is a tremendous move
for Brotherhood and I look forward
to attending and sharing:' said former
Brotherhood president Jeffrey Stewart.
Though Brotherhood is sponsoring
ACHIM, the meetings are open to all
men from Temple Israel or any other
synagogue.
ACHIM meets monthly on the
fourth Thursday evening. Participants
will begin with a meal that allows
time for friendship and trust to devel-
op. The meal will be followed by sing-
ing, chanting and movement, led by
Cantor Smolash of Temple Israel along
with other temple members.
A story or a poem will then be read
to stimulate thoughts and feelings
about the chosen topic and to draw the
men into sharing their personal emo-
tions and experiences with each other.
"The men will be asked to main-
tain confidentiality about what is
shared during this journey we are
taking together;' said John Shanteau,
ACHIM's architect and facilitator.
"It is always okay to discuss one's
own experience of what happens in
the group, but not okay to ident
others who are there with you or their
stories. This is part of the way we can
learn to trust each other and feel safe
while looking deeply into ourselves."
Shanteau, a licensed marriage
and family therapist, retired teacher
and high school guidance counselor,
brings his experience to the process.
"I'm a native of California and
have been in this area since 1999. In
California, I was both a participant in
and a leader of men's spirituality groups
and found the work highly gratifying.
"I have been looking for a way to
create that here and, through Temple
Israel's Brotherhood sponsorship, I've
found a group of men who are coura-
geous and willing to take the chance at
looking inward and sharing what they
find:"
"ACHIM is not therapy. It is brother-
hood and friendship at its best. It's
a place where men can join together
and be real about what is going on
for them;' said Shanteau. "I'm hoping
ACHIM becomes a highlight on each
man's calendar, something he looks
forward to every month."

Religious Books Donated
Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington
Hills recently donated a number of
Hertz Chumashim, which are no lon-
ger used by the congregation, to two
synagogues which were very grateful to
receive them.
The first group of seven chumashim
(the Torah and Commentaries) were
shipped to the Etz Hayyim Synagogue
in Hania, Crete, where many books
were recently destroyed in two arson
fires. According to David Webber, a
Canadian in Crete, the Jews there "con-
tinue to pray in a burned and gutted
sacred structure one has known to be
blessed, beautiful and gracious."
Twenty-four additional Adat Shalom
chumashim are now in use at the
Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue in
Detroit, which holds weekly, lay-led,
Shabbat services.
J-Serve teens, under the direction
of Jodi Gross, Adat Shalom associ-
ate director of education and youth,
have worked hard to spruce up the
Downtown Synagogue.
Adat Shalom has replaced the Hertz
Chumash with the Etz Hayim Chumash.
Adat Shalom member Jerry Cook
made the arrangements for both of
these donations.
