Volunteer, Grad Win Kudos

Rabbi Well returns to keynote Akiva banquet.

A

kiva Hebrew Day School's 46th annual
banquet will honor Rosa Chessler, recipi-
ent of the Ahavat Torah award, and Cheryl
Jerusalem, recipient of the Alumna of the Year ('79)
award, on May 2, at Adat Shalom Synagogue in
Farmington Hills.
The awards recognize the contributions of a spe-
cial leader and an outstanding Akiva graduate.
Rabbi Steven Weil, executive vice president of
the Orthodox Union and former rabbi of the Young
Israel of Oak Park, will be the guest speaker.
Chessler has been the consummate volunteer for
three decades. No task is too great or too small for
her, from chairing Akiva's dinner in 1979 to chairing
last year's highly successful Grandparent Day pro-
gram and many events in between.
Jerusalem has retained strong and continuous
bonds with her alma mater for more than 30 years.
She has served as chair of the PTA and countless
committees for Akiva's annual banquet and Chinese
auction. Currently, she volunteers as director of
alumni affairs and over the past year has reconnect-
ed with hundreds of alumni. She is married to Marc
Jerusalem. Their children, Noa (2010), Elad (seventh

grade) and Orly (fourth grade) are students at
Akiva, and Yissachar (2005) and Dorya (2008) are
proud alumni.
Here in Michigan, Rabbi Weil's leadership at
imp was complemented by his involvement with
the Jewish Federation. He then moved to California
where he served as senior rabbi of Beth Jacob
Congregation of Beverly Hills, the largest Orthodox
congregation outside metropolitan New York.
As executive vice president of the New York-based
Orthodox Union, his vision, energy and work ethic
help the organization with the stated goals of help-
ing Jews build connections to Jewish life.
"On a personal note dinner chair Sheryl Korelitz
said, "I am especially pleased that we are honoring
Rosa and Cheryl, two women who truly represent
Akiva's ideals as well as our school's commitment to
the future of Klal Yisrael:'
The dinner program will begin at 7 p.m. It will be
preceded by a strolling dinner that will begin at 5:30
p.m. as well as a patron reception that will be held
from 5:30-6:15 p.m.
For information or reservations, call the school
office at (248) 386-1625. ❑
