Friday, April 30, 2010 FILM FESTIVAL WORKSHOP IVE INI poommonwommomommommor. From the Festival Chairman oordinated The Screen Actors Guild - Michigan Seats are limited, please call 248-432-5461 Dear Friends: Welcome back to the movies! As chair of the festival, I am pleased with our selection of films this year. Once again, we have found more than 40 incredible movies from around the world. Of course, we have films from Israel and the United States, but also from Canada, France, Argentina and Australia. I know that with all the new technology, watching a movie at home can seem more attractive. With huge HD televisions, surround sound and comfortable couches, it takes some effort to come to the theatre. But what you gain at the festival cannot be duplicated at home. Our film festival is about community, where you enjoy the experience with others, friends, family and strangers. You laugh together and cry together. And is there a better smell than freshly popped movie theatre popcorn? The event continues even beyond the film showing. Along with movies to entertain and educate, we are bringing guest speakers, sponsoring talks by community leaders and room to continue these discussions with fellow movie goers long after the final credits. With all the films to choose from, deciding what to see may seem daunting. As you browse our brochure, make your top picks, maybe five-six films that you can't miss. Then fill in with a few more. Finally, for good measure, take a chance on a handful of additional films, just to try something new. You might be pleasantly surprised at these extra picks. Finally, to make this a truly amazing community event, bring someone new to the festival: a friend, a child, a spouse. There is a movie for everyone and an audience for every movie. 1 Lunch & Learn Panel Discussion 11:30 a.m. -1 p.m. e - ri 0 Meet e ne im cap a o Michigan! Back in November when I began, I could not have imagined how exciting it would be to serve as director of the Lenore Marwil Jewish Film Festival. With big shoes to fill, I stepped into the position. As most often happens, everyone in the Jewish community has been welcoming, caring and ready to lend a hand, ear and word of advice. I've lived in many different communities throughout the country, and I can honestly say that nowhere has been as welcoming as Metro Detroit. Blessed with an incredible festival chair and steering committee, we began 2010 with a new vigor and excitement. Allow yourself to be swept away by our fantastic festival of films which range from a documentary about the birth of Hollywood to an everyman story about self-acceptance through sumo wresting to a thriller about an escaped war prisoner who committed unspeakable atrocities. And be sure to join us for our Patron Night event with Joshua Sinclair. A best- selling author, physician, actor and director, Sinclair wrote and directed "Jump," the incredible true story of a Jewish man accused of murder who grew up to be one of Hollywood's greatest photographers. We also have special guests certain to bring depth and insight to the films. We will welcome Emily Kunstler, daughter of lawyer William Kunstler, and Yisrael "Izzi" Lifschutz, a master filmmaker and storyteller of the "Hasidic Actors Guild." Another exciting surprise is our first-ever Workshop Initiative, where we will present a day of workshops featuring local Jewish leaders and representatives of the thriving Michigan film industry. Despite these incredibly difficult times, when we all pull together we find avenues to enrich our lives through the joy of film and the arts. Thank you for your support, and many thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this festival possible.
