Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, who heads Poland's Catholic-Jewish Dialogue, was the longtime personal secretary and friend to Pope John Paul II, whom he accompanied on the pope's historic visit to Israel 10 years ago, in March 2000. Cardinal Dziwisz came to Israel on a journey of remembrance and to promote Catholic-Jewish relations. The Cardinal made a special visit to Yad Vashem, where he placed flowers in the Hall of Remembrance, strolled along the Avenue of the Righteous among the Nations and met with Avner Shalev, the chairman of Yad Vashem, and other officials. The Cardinal also held meetings with Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger and Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem Naomi Tsur. "Poland holds a special significance to the Jewish people said Abraham H. Foxman, who was born in Poland and saved during the Holocaust by his Polish Catholic nanny. Australian Jew Slain Sydney, Australia/JTA — A memorial service was held in Australia for the son of a Holocaust survivor whose body was found a few weeks ago. Some 300 friends and relatives attend- ed the service last week for John Garda, a businessman in the coastal town of Byron Bay, about 800 miles north of Sydney. Two brothers have been charged over his murder. Garda, 54, was last seen on Feb. 8; his body was found by police on Feb. 27 buried in the sand about 30 yards down a walking track, according to local media reports. His body was transferred to Sydney for a post-mortem. Rabbi Moshe Serebryanski, a Chabad rabbi who serves the area, told J-Wire, a local Jewish Web site, that Garda had "readily identified himself as being Jewish:' Garda's mother, who survived the Holocaust, lives in a Jewish aged- care facility in Sydney. The Emanuel Synagogue in Sydney, which is part of the Progressive movement, listed Garda among their death notices this week. Byron Bay is home to a growing Jewish community comprised mainly of expa- triate Israelis and Jews from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne who have opted for a quieter life. Corey Haim, 38 Toronto/JTA — Actor Corey Haim was buried in a private Jewish ceremony in Toronto attended by about 200 relatives and close friends. The former teen heartthrob, who shot to fame in the 1980s with films such as The Lost Boys, License to Drive and Lucas, died March 10 at the suburban Los Angeles home he shared with his Israeli- born mother, Judy. He was buried Tuesday in his native Toronto. Haim, 38, had an enlarged heart, pulmonary congestion and water in his lungs. An autopsy has yet to confirm the cause of death, but a police spokesper- son in Los Angeles openly speculated it might have been the result of a drug overdose. Haim had been open about his struggle with drug and alcohol abuse, telling a London tabloid in 2004 that he "did cocaine for about a year-and-a-half, then it led to crack." He started acting as a child after his mother enrolled him in drama classes to help him overcome his shyness. Haim often was paired in films with fellow Jewish actor Corey Feldman; and the two were the subject of a short-lived reality TV show, The Two Coreys. en economic time '401 dign and respect... and to meet the individual needs of all our families THE IRA KAUFMAN CF-IAPEL Bringing Together Famiiy, Faith & Comrnimity 18325 WEST NINE MILE ROAD, SOUTHFIELD, MI 48075 I 248.569.0020 90 March 25 • 2010 iN Obituaries I FAX 248.569.2502 WWW IRAKAUFMAN.COM
