He was born Deb. 10, 1915,
to Joseph and Rachel Papo. His father
was a tinsmith and roofer who later
owned hardware stores. His mother was
a homemaker.
Mr. Papo was a graduate of
Northwestern High
School and Detroit
Tech, with a pharmacy
degree. For one year,
he sold newspapers for
the Detroit Times. He
also worked at various
restaurants and as a bar-
tender; he served 40 years
with the Liquor Control
Commission.
During World War II

in the Army as a cook; he
was proud to serve his country.
He was quite active in the community,
serving as a president of B'nai B'rith
Israel Lodge, president of the Sephardic
Community of Greater Detroit (Keter
Torah Synagogue) and as a member of
the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In demonstrating his pride in his
Sephardic heritage, he considered it a
mitzvah to help make a minyan at any
time. Sephardic community members
became an extension of his family.
He was devastated at the loss of his
wife, Pearl and "retreated" after her
death. He did, however, remain very
independent, never wanting any help.
He deeply loved his family and felt that
there is no such thing as "in-laws."

SHEILA BARILL, 72, former Detroiter of
Las Vegas, Nev., died March 14, 2010.
She had retired as an administrative
assistant. She was a loving mother, bubbie,
sister and friend.
Mrs. Barill is survived by her daughters
and sons-in-law, Terryn and Rick Tower,
Jacqueline and Jonathan Kleinberg; sister,
Doris Gottlieb; grandchildren, Benjamin
and Liana. She was the sister of the late
Irving Barill.

GERTRUDE BRAININ, 89, of West
Bloomfield, died March 20, 2010.
She graduated from Wayne University

The family invoked many fond memo-
ries of the fun at the Saraquse family
dinners and Papo Family Club, recalling
that Mr. Papo was a hard worker, always
did his job to best of his ability and
then some and never thought twice of
going out of his way to help a friend or
family.
Though the Depression
years were very rough,
he pledged that he would
make sure his family would
always be secure.
He was described as a
quiet, caring person who
would open his house to
anyone in need of help.
Among his many plea-
sures in life were running
around and swimming
with grandchildren and
later playing cards and
Rummi-Kub.
Mr. Papo is survived by his son and
daughter-in-law, Joseph and Cindy
Papo; daughter and son-in-law, Jean
Susan and Stanley Alspector; grand-
children, Nancy Papo, Carrie Simon,
Sarah Alspector and David and Karen
Alspector; "great-grandchild:, Addison
Kannisto; sister, Regina Polinsky; sis-
ters-in-law, Yetta Saraquse, Diane Papo
and Florrie Saraquse.
He was the husband of the late Pearl
Papo.

and taught in Detroit for a few years. Her
husband built Cranbrook Nursing Home
in Detroit in 1958. She ran the home, fol-
lowing her father's death in 1962 until she
sold it in 1985.
Mrs. Brainin traveled the world and
made her first of many visits to Israel in
1968. She was a member of Temple Israel
for over 50 years and was very active in
sisterhood and was an usher. In addition,
she was a member of Pioneer Women and
was a regional president of ORT, where she
won the Woman of Valor award.
She is survived by her son and daughter,
David and Jacquelyn Brainin of Columbus,
Ohio; daughters and son-in-law, Eleanor
Brainin of Scarborough, Maine, Laurel
Hoffman and Ben Plotch of Smithtown,

N.Y.; grandchildren, Jeremy (Ortal)
Hoffman and Aaron Hoffman; great-
grandchildren, Yehudit Rachel Hoffman
and Yakir Yisrael Hoffman; sister, Sylvia
Goldberg.
Mrs. Brainin was the beloved wife of
the late Jerome Brainin; sister of the late
Mildred Shubow.
Interment at Clover Hill Park Cemetery
in Birmingham. Contributions may be
made to Jewish Senior Life-The Fleishman
Residence/Blumberg Plaza. Arrangements
by Dorfman Chapel.

IRWIN CLAYMAN, 92, of Southfield, died
March 19, 2010.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64
years, Esther Clayman; son and daugh-

ter-in-law, Dr. Lewis and Minoo Clayman
of West Bloomfield; brothers, Milton
Clayman of California, Franklin Clayman
of Florida; sister, Rose Brudno of Ohio;
grandchildren, Eric Harold and Laura
Marie Clayman (John Colleton); many
nieces and nephews.
Mr. Clayman was the loving brother of
the late Ruth Hope; dear brother-in-law of
the late Edith Clayman.
