report "makes highly selective use of
sacred texts, historical events, and
current realities to build a narrative
against the Jewish state'
The Presbyterian group sparked
controversy on Israel in 2004 when its
General Assembly approved divesting
church money from Israel. The church
changed its position in 2006, calling
for the church to use its money in the
Middle East to promote regional peace.

the Hebrew Institute, performing some
rabbinic duties but not others because
of her gender.
Weiss also had been censured by the
staunchly Orthodox Agudath Israel of
America, which declared that by tak-
ing such a step and insisting it was
tantamount to rabbinic ordination,
Weiss had placed himself outside the
bounds of Orthodoxy.

Weiss' Ordainment Strategy

Rome/JTA — It could be five years

New York/JTA — Rabbi Avi Weiss has
backed away from the idea of ordain-
ing women as Orthodox rabbis under
the term rabba.
Weiss, a promi-
nent Modern
Orthodox rabbi who
guides the Hebrew
Institute of Riverdale
in the Bronx, had
taken heat from the
Orthodox commu-
Rabbi Avi
nity since he made
Weiss
the announcement
in January that he
would use the feminized version of
rabbi for his student, Sara Hurwitz,
who now has the title maharat.
The Rabbinical Council of America, an
umbrella organization consisting mostly
of Modern Orthodox rabbis, considered
revoking his ordination, The New York
Jewish Week reported, though the verac-
ity of the report is still under debate.
But Weiss, the founder and leader of
the Yeshivat Chovevei Torah rabbinical
school, and the RCA apparently have
come to an agreement.
"It is not my intention or the inten-
tion of Yeshivat Maharat to confer the
title oflabba upon its graduates',' Weiss
said in a statement last Friday. "Yeshivat
Maharat prepares women for positions
of religious leadership in the Orthodox
community. Each student who completes
its course of study in Tanach, Talmud,
Halachah and Jewish Thought, and
is deemed fit by her faith, knowledge
of our Mesoret, ethical integrity and
temperament to assume positions of
religious leadership in Orthodox insti-
tutions will be confirmed as manhigah
hilkhatit, ruhanit, toranit (Maharat)."
The RCA concurred in its own state-
ment.
"We are gratified that during the
course of these conversations, Rabbi
Weiss concluded that neither he nor
Yeshivat Maharat would ordain women
as rabbis and that Yeshivat Maharat
will not confer the title of labba' on
graduates of their program," the orga-
nization wrote.
Hurwitz has served seven years at

before the Vatican's secret archives
dealing with Pope Pius XII's reign are
fully catalogued and opened to schol-
ars, a Vatican official said.
Bishop Sergio Pagano, prefect of the
Vatican Secret Archives, made the time
estimate on March 1 when he opened
an event in the Canary Islands on the
history of the Church, the Catholic
news agency Zenit reported.
There exist some 16 million docu-
ments from Pius' 1939-58 pontificate,
according to Zenit.
Jewish and other scholars have
called on the Vatican to open the secret
archives from the World War II period
to clarify the role Pius played during the
Holocaust. Critics accuse him of turn-
ing a blind eye to Jewish suffering; the
Vatican and other supporters say he
worked behind the scenes to save Jews.
Last month, a group of Catholic schol-
ars wrote to Pope Benedict XVI urging
him to slow Pius' advance toward saint-
hood until the matter is cleared up.
According to Zenit, Pagano said the
Vatican would be willing to open the
archives immediately, since there was
nothing to "fear" from them, but the
documents must still be registered,
catalogued and put into order.

Pius Papers Stalled 5 Years

Answering
Israel's Critics

The Charge
Nation of Islam leader Louis
Farrakhan said publicly earlier this
month that a U.S. Congress divided
on most issues is united on Israel
because the members are con-
trolled by "Zionists".

The Answer

Farrakhan is America's most out-
spoken anti-Semite. His charge is
an example of the oft-heard "Jews
have too much power" canard.
