he "green" at Shosh and Marc Silberstein's wedding last summer went
far beyond the grassy hills and several-hundred-year-old landscaping
that surrounded their outdoor ceremony.
With a commitment to include environmental consciousness in the Aug. 16 cel-
ebration, the couple protected the Earth and its inhabitants with the likes of kippot
made of recycled cardboard, silk boutonnieres in lieu of cut flowers, a meat-free din-
ner and reusable tote-bag gifts.
In the true spirit of personalized recycling, Shosh and Marc were even married
at the same venue, under the same, giant oak tree as Shosh's parents were 31
years earlier. And Shosh and her mom walked down the aisle to the same music:
"Pachabel's Canon in D Minor."
The couple — he from Atlanta, she from West Bloomfield — first met at an inter-
national United Synagogue Youth convention in Philadelphia in 1997 and became
friends while participating in the Conservative movement's Nativ: The College
Leadership Program in Israel the next school year. They reconnected in 2007 when
Marc sent a Facebook message telling her he would be visiting Chicago where she
was working.
Planning the wedding involved a slew of phone calls and e-mails between Atlanta,
the home of Marc's parents, Eileen and Milton Silberstein, and Washington D.C.,
where Shosh's parents — Tim and Dr. Helene Kalson Cohen — now live.
