Reject Goldstone

LAST OF THE SEAS011.

Congressional letter advances
Israel's right to self-evaluate.

A

bipartisan group of U.S.
representatives sent a letter
to Secretary of State Hillary
Rodham Clinton to
express concern about
the Goldstone Report
being used as a tool to
condemn Israel and
sabotage the peace
process between the
Jewish state and its
Palestinian neighbors.
Secretary
The Goldstone
Clinton
Report accuses Israel
of deliberately targeting Palestinian
civilians during Operation Cast Lead —
its offensive against Hamas in the Gaza
Strip last winter to halt llamas rocket
fire from Gaza into southern Israel.
The Feb. 25 letter, signed by 95
members of Congress, thanks the
Obama administration for strong
opposition to the report, but ques-
tioned how United Nations member
states that do not share America's
vision for a peaceful solution to the
Arab-Israeli conflict would use the
report.
Letter signers include these mem-
bers of Michigan's Congressional
Delegation: Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield
Township; Candice Miller, R-Harrison
Township; Mike Rogers, R-Brighton;
Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland; and Sander
Levin, D-Royal Oak.
The letter cited the Israeli govern-
ment's Jan. 29 U.N. update on the steps
it has taken to investigate Operation
Cast Lead: "The Israeli report details
the investigations, legal proceedings
and lessons learned from the Gaza
offensive. The Israeli report demon-
strates that Israel is fully prepared
to investigate its own actions using
existing impartial and independent
mechanisms."
The letter fears the U.N. General
Assembly passing a resolution to
refer the Goldstone Report to the
U.N. Security Council and ultimately
to the International Court of Justice.
Such referral would jeopardize Israeli-
Palestinian peace talks, according to
the letter.
"We believe that the correct venue
for investigating issues related to
Operation Cast Lead is not the
Security Council or the International

Court of Justice, but the world-class
Israeli justice system itself:' the letter
states.
Letter signers state they share the
Obama administration's "commitment
to a secure and lasting peace in the
Middle East" and its "continued efforts
to prevent multilateral institutions
from being tainted by an anti-Zionist
and anti-Semitic agenda that questions
the legitimacy of Israel's right to self-
defense!'
The letter to Clinton concludes: "We
urge you to continue communicating
to your counterparts around the world
that defending the right to self-defense
for Israel, the United States and all free,
democracies is an important American
foreign policy priority." ❑
