seldom wear a suit, especially around a construction site. Unlike Linda, I don't
have a need for a large variety of clothing. When my pair of black trousers wears
out, I shop for another pair and replace them. It's that simple."
There are many men and women who view clothes like Ellis Roth. They maximize
their wardrobe by knowing exactly what they have and what they need.
Cathi Lefton of Closet Design, West Bloomfield, says that clearing out your closet
can give you a huge mental lift. "It can also give you room to develop your own
fashion style with the clothes you enjoy," says Cathi. "My advice is to pull everything
out of your closet and organize it by color, by sleeve length, by pant length or by
season. Then you can see everything you wear in an organized fashion!'
The closet and fashion mavens recommend that the only way to accentuate your
assets is to clear the clutter and make space, such as getting rid of clothes that
haven't fit you in two years.
As a residential property manager, Paul Schaefers wardrobe varies from a suit
and tie to more casual attire for his business. "I am a mix-and-match person," says
Schaefer of Farmington Hills. "I may wear an older suit and accessorize it with a
new belt or give a high shine to my shoes. I don't want my clothes to be stuck with
one particular piece.
"This way, I can mix that jacket with a different pair of trousers and a different
shirt and I save on not buying more clothes. My major issue when it comes to
spending money on clothes is the dry cleaning bill."
Barbara Gash of Bloomfield Hills has been selling clothes out of her home for
more than two decades. "I keep track of what my clients buy, so it's easy to update
their clothes for the next season and match the new pieces with pieces they
already have. The important thing is to update those old clothes so you don't look
completely outdated."
Clients of Albina Malinovsky, a West Bloomfield dressmaker, often count on her
to update their clothes. "It's not just fashion that changes," says Albina, "but figures
and shapes also change and clothes need to be adjusted to fit well.
"Sometimes I may add a pocket, change a neckline, shorten a hemline or add a
shoulder pad to make it work with today's fashion. Sometimes all an older jacket
needs is a new silk blouse in a contrasting color. If it's a good piece of clothing, it
usually doesn't require much work. Just a little creativity."
Every item in your closet isn't the same in terms of the time it will work for you.
For example, you'll probably have more years with a formal dress than a pair of
jeans. Most people can get away with wearing jeans for about three years. After
that, the dark "going out jeans" become your "everyday jeans" because of fading. It
doesn't mean you should toss them; you just have to change their function in your
wardrobe.
Even with the skill of a seamstress like Malinovsky, you still need to periodically
clear out items that are hopelessly old and will never be used again. That will
help to keep the clutter down. It certainly will make shopping in your closet a lot
smoother.
Keep in mind that looking like a million bucks and spending a million bucks are
rarely connected. In fact, you're probably more fashionable than you think because
there are dozens of outfits in your closet waiting to be discovered. Fl
