Joe Cornell was started as a way to teach formal dances, etiquette and social
graces to kids before bar mitzvah year. The company's founder became a community
icon to whom children flocked.
Schlussel and Jasgur were children of the 1980s, learning from Joe himself. They
catapulted to the top of their respective Joe Cornell classes and, as teens, began
working for Joe as emcees and entertainers. That continued through college — local
families requested Steve or Becca for their parties and they'd come home to do
events.
When Jasgur graduated in 1991, he and his younger sister bought the business
from Joe, who was ready to retire. By then, the
industry had expanded to include competitors,
but Joe Cornell remained a household name
known for its mastery of spinning parties in the
right direction.
Today, Jasgur and Schlussel teach Joe Cornell
sixth-grade dance classes, which sell out every
season and run five nights a week from October
through January. Jasgur works as an entertainer,
too. Both are married, with two kids apiece.
"Steve and his team exude warmth and

personality," says Ken Korotkin. "They make the
special person feel special at a time when the
focus should be on them entirely."
"A friend of mine is writing a book about bar mitzvah party planning," says Nancy
Reed, "and I told her that it's really important to have your child choose 20 or 30
songs that they really like and want to have played during the party, and also for the
parents to choose five or 10 songs that they want to hear.
"My friend said, 'That doesn't matter and it doesn't happen.' I said, 'With Joe
