Dr. Conrad Giles, right, introduced speaker Kenneth Stein of Emory University in Atlanta. the growing incivility gripping our country" said JCPA President and CEO Rabbi Steve Gutow."It is unfortunate, but our nation is clearly on a path of self-destruction unless attitudes change and those elected to serve the people quit campaigning for re-election long enough to listen to one another and find ways to reconcile their differences." Delegates also discussed the need to handle disagreements in the Jewish community in a civil manner and strove to do so. Advocating for civility is important as advocacy on other fronts heats up, said incoming JCPA Chair Dr. Conrad Giles of Detroit. He began a two-year term Monday. "This is clearly not just a Jewish problem, but it is our problem as part of our par- ticipation in the public square when issues of Jewish existence and survival require that opinions be shared:' Giles said. "If you spend any time in meet- ings, you recognize how little can be accomplished if we talk by one another rather than to one another, and don't listen with respect to opin- ions other than our own." Giles, a past president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and of the former Council of Jewish Federations, has gained a strong appreciation of the Detroit JCRC and the JCPA. Praising the JCPA staff, he said there has been a "quantum leap" in its role in convening and supporting its member organizations as well as developing new funding sources. "As you look at this [community rela- tions] field and its importance, it's an obligation to make sure this organi- zation continues and flourishes." Detroit JCRC President Richard Nodel left the conference hopeful. "I took some comfort in the fact that there are so many good people from around the country who share the same concerns and are willing to devote the energy needed to work on them:' he said. Judy Rosenberg, a Detroit JCRC vice president who also represented the National Council of Jewish Women, liked the way the theme of civility wove through the sessions. "I think that is important in our world today, and I particularly liked the modeling of how to get along with people you don't necessarily agree with:' she said. Said Steven Hartman, the Federation's Young Adult Division delegate to JCRC, "I have to admit I was out of the loop on the extent of anti- Semitism. I knew about the Iran threat, but the BDS threat is very important to work on, too." "I'm energized by the synergies that come out of a convention like this',' said Danielle DePriest, a University of Michigan student and Mazon hunger fellow for Berkley-based Yad Ezra and the JCRC. She was impressed by delegates "creating facts on the ground by com- municating with the community, mak- ing the relations with the government and doing the work'." Dr. Conrad Giles of Detroit was elected national JCPA president. ❑ Audio speeches: www.jcpaplenum.org . Share your thoughts online: thejewishnews. com/community. Go to General News.
