Ovation From ORT
Doreen Hermelin is praised for her
three years at national helm.
D
oreen Hermelin, the inaugural
president of ORT America,
culminates her three-year
presidency at its Tri-Annual Convention,
March 7, in Chicago. The event will corn-
memorate ORT's 130th anniversary.
"I am so proud to have been president
of ORT America and continue the legacy
of providing students with a cutting-edge
education and ensuring them job place-
ment in the future," said Hermelin of
Bingham Farms.
"For these past three years, I was
privileged to help lead this amazing orga-
nization and work alongside a terrific
group of committed leaders and donors.
Together, ORT has increased enrollment,
expanded programs and graduated more
individuals than when I started my posi-
tion."
The first elected president of ORT
America in 2007, Hermelin effectively
led the merger of American ORT and
Women's American ORT into one effi-
cient, united entity; guiding the orga-
nization through its initial period of
adjustment and growing pains. Under
her stewardship, it strengthened itself
in the United States to better support
ORT's global education and training
programs in 63 countries.
"I know of no other communal lead-
er who could bring to the table the skill
set that ORT America needed in its
first president:' said Alan E. Klugman,
national executive director of ORT
America.
"Besides being a brilliant fundraiser
and tireless champion of our 300,000
students around the world, Mrs.
Hermelin has also graciously shared
her warmth and charm with the entire
organization."
During Hermelin's term, ORT
American became the primary supporter
of expanding programming in Israel;
launching the Science Journey initia-
tive that brings science and technology
education to Israeli schools — including
installing 400 "smart classrooms" across
the northern communities.
Additionally, she worked tirelessly to
campaign for the current new campus
being built in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as
current schools are beyond capacity and
students were being turned away. The
building is currently under construction.
Last year, she led ORT America
through the worst economic crisis since
the Great Depression, making painful
decisions to streamline the organization's
operations that would ensure its survival
and concentrate donor's contributions
to the students it serves. She rallied sup-
porters to continue their giving despite
