OTPOURRI
Two very simple words that say
so much ... THANK YOU ... are
far from being enough for the enormous
sense of emotional gratitude that I feel for
the overwhelming outpour from people
who so graciously expressed their con-
dolences on the passing of my dear wife,
Frieda ... The tremendously large amount
of expressions in comforting cards, dona-
tions in her memory, shivah assistance,
and so very much more were beyond
all comprehension ... It was certainly a
magnificent tribute to Frieda, a wonderful
wife, friend and companion ... no man
can ask for more ... so very well-liked,
popular and admired.
I wish I could express my gratitude to
everyone personally for their thoughts and
kindnesses ... But the
unbelievable amount
in Frieda's honor from
so many parts of the
country has been far
and above more than
ever could be antici-
pated.
I truly and sincerely
thank you many, many
times from the bot-
tom of a very grateful
heart.
GIGI'S KORNER
... Thank you for lov-
ing my mommy. I miss Frieda and Gigi
her so much.
FOR YEARS,
MANY folks knew the restaurant was
there, but in recent times, rarely made
it a first choice ... Which appeared to
be strange since the former Steak &
Ale on Orchard Lake Road and 12 Mile,
Farmington Hills, always seemed to have

something that had made
it a longtime favorite ... In
an attempt to capture a new
dining audience, the site will
soon be reopened as an inde-
pendently owned steak house
named Steak Tavern.
IT APPEARS SOMEWHAT
like a bunch of kids daring
each other to jump over a mud
pile and continually falling in
... This is the challenge restau-
rants keep taking in opening
at the Orchard Lake Road and
Pontiac Trail, Orchard Lake Village, locale
... Nine restaurants, last being the very
short-lived Valentina, have already tried
their luck ... Scheduled to soon open on
the site where number one Meating Place
was originally owned
successfully by Bruce
Cameron will be number
10, called the Corner
Cigar Bar (no affiliation
with the Corner Bar in
Birmingham's Townsend
Hotel).

at George's Honey Tree,
Northwestern Highway,
West Bloomfield ...
Smiling, gracious and
attentive, Suela is a
requested customer
pleaser.
QUESTION &
ANSWER DEPT. ... "Can you please tell
me the name of a restaurant that was in
Detroit, not far from Greektown, owned
by two Lebanese sisters who served
Mediterranean food?" ... Marshall Blau.
[That would no doubt be the wonder-

ful Sheik owned years ago by
Esther Michaels and her sister
on East Lafayette at the edge
of Detroit's Greektown that
looked like it was somebody's
house ... That is, of course,
because it once had been and
was continually run to much
successful satisfaction as
though its patrons were fam-
ily.]
YES, THAT'S Lou DeCillis
you see in those Cottonelle TV
commercials ... The owner of
Savino Sorbet manufactured and sold in
this area, and 1970 graduate chef from the
Culinary Institute of America, is also an
actor whose commercial appearances have
attracted much attention.
Lou's fat-free, 106-calories sorbets
are among the best and sold hereabouts
at Hiller's Markets, the Print Gallery in
Southfield and select Busch Markets ...
He has been in several films and is under
contract with Kleenex/Cottonelle for the
next year.
ERRATA, TYPO, ETC. Dept.... Thanks
to Liz Rosen, teacher at Temple Israel, West
Bloomfield, for making us aware of the boo-
boo ... Ifs Deborah Cymerint, not Dolores,
fine waitperson at RJ's American Grille,
Northwestern Highway, Farmington Hills,
who had taught at Temple Israel with Liz.
MAIL DEPT. ... "My sister-in-law,
Laurie Cronk, who has had several
meals there, encouraged us to try Pete's
Broadway Cafe on Woodward Heights in
Ferndale. It is a charming and delight-
ful former Coney Island with the feel
of the Beverly Hills Grill [on Southfield
Road]. My husband, Neil Cronk, and I had
omelets and asparagus Benedict. I can
personally also vouch for the complimen-

tary mini scones. The lunch and dinner
menus look fabulous and the wait staff is
pleasant and attentive. Favorite dinners
at Pete's Broadway Cafe are the chicken
marsala and sauteed salmon!' ... Lorene

WHEN HE WAS a valued long snapper
center on the Michigan State Spartans'
varsity football squad under Coach George
Perles, his only thought was getting the
ball to his kicker with plenty of time and
accuracy plus making sure the guy kneel-
ing across from him didn't burst through.
Today, Dr. Mark Shapiro, son of Dee
and the late Dr. Marshall Shapiro, is busy
making people well and saving lives as
associate director of trauma surgery, criti-
cal care and general surgery at the Duke
University Hospital in Durham, N.C. ... He
was recently trauma surgeon on a medical
group from Duke that went to Haiti to help
the earthquake victims in Cange and Port-
au-Prince.
As one of the Duke doctors and nurses,
Mark was part of another great team on
which he never dreamed of playing.
SEVENTH WESTERN NOVEL by for-
mer local publicist William "Bill" Garwood
will be Roy Bean's Gold ... It is being
advertised on the Barnes & Noble Internet
page under W.R. Garwood ... Western
number eight by Bill soon follow, will be
a sequel called Roy Bean's War about the -
Civil War in Western territories.
