hen the starting lineup
for the Bloomfield Hills
Andover High School
boys basketball team
takes the court, the Barons are often
nearly halfway to a minyan.
Seniors Matanya Kidron, Dean
Herzoff and Danny Weiss are fre-
quently joined by fellow senior Max
Nathan in Andover's starting five.
Outside of Frankel Jewish
Academy in West Bloomfield, it's
unusual to have that many Jewish
starters on a prep basketball team.
And the story doesn't end there.
Andover also has six Jewish play-
ers on its bench, giving the Barons
10 Jewish players among the 15 on
their roster.
Even though Andover has strug-
gled this season — the Barons
were 6-9 overall and 2-7 in Oakland
Activities Association Division 3 last
week — Coach Jeff Rubin has noth-
ing but good things to say about his
team. Everyone has been a class act
on and off the court.
Kidron, an Israeli who transferred
to Andover from Frankel Academy
following his sophomore year, is the
Barons' top scorer. He averages
about 24 points per game.
The 6-foot-0 guard has poured
in more than 30 points three
times, including 32-point efforts
against Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-
Kingswood and Ferndale.
"Matanya is difficult to guard
because he's so quick," Rubin said.
"He's probably the quickest kid I've
coached in 13 years of coaching."
Kidron hopes to play basketball in
college.
Herzoff is a 5-11 guard who has
an interesting basketball skill set. He
often plays point guard, but he can
also get physical and do some dam-
age at the post while averaging about
10 points. Rubin said Herzoff plans to
play basketball at Adrian College.
Weiss, a 6-4, 210-pound forward,
leads the Barons in rebounds, assists
and blocked shots, and he's second
in scoring behind Kidron. Andover's
tallest player averages more than nine
boards, three assists and 13 points
per game. Several Division III schools
have expressed an interest in him.
He's changed his game on the court
to prepare for the next level.
"I've made the transition to being

more of a wing player than an inside
player and I'm confident I can play
there in college," Weiss said.
Rubin said Nathan, a 5-9 guard, is
an unselfish floor leader.
"When he's out there, Max worries
more about making sure his team-
mates get the ball in a good position
to score," the coach said.

Danny Cole, Drake Deitch,
Jeremy Fishman, Ryan Lederman,
Robbie Small and Mitchell Werner

are the other Jewish players on the
Andover team.
