Anguish Over Execution
Washington/JTA — Agudath Israel
of America expressed "deep anguish"
after the execution in Florida of a
murderer whose case drew Orthodox
pleas for clemency.
Martin Grossman, 45, died at 6:17
p.m. Eastern time in Starke, Fla., on
Feb. 16 by lethal injection, the Tampa
Tribune reported. His last words were
an expression of "heartfelt remorse" to
the family of his victim, Peggy Park,
an acceptance of responsibility for the
crime and the Shema prayer.
"The tragic news out of Florida
leaves us feeling deep anguish and
sorrow:' Rabbi David Zwiebel, Agudath
Israel of America's executive vice
president, said in a statement.
"Mr. Grossman's execution has hit
our community very hard. He was
a fellow Jew, and so we saw him as a
brother."
An array of Orthodox Jewish orga-
nizations had pleaded to no avail with
Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, who is in a
tough primary fight for the Republican
nomination in this year's U.S. Senate
election. The Vatican also pleaded on
Grossman's behalf after a request from
Orthodox Jews.
Grossman killed Park, a state wild-
life officer, on Dec. 13, 1984. Grossman
was 19 when Park tried to arrest him
for shooting a stolen gun in an unde-
veloped area. He and a companion
beat Park before shooting her with
her own gun. At the time Grossman
was on probation for grand theft and
breaking and entering.
Grossman's intercessors argued that
the crime was not premeditated, that
he had expressed remorse and that he
had diminished mental capacity. The
U.S. Supreme Court turned away their
final appeal on Feb. 16.
Present at the execution were Park's
brother, sister and mother. Grossman
spent his final day with his rabbi, an
aunt and two friends.
P.A. Settles Over Terror
Washington/JTA — The Palestinian
Authority settled a lawsuit for an
undisclosed amount with the widow
of an American killed in Israel in 2002.
Papers were filed last month
requesting the suit be dropped since
the conditions of the settlement
written last October had been met,
Politico reported this week.
The suit was brought by Leslye
Knox, whose husband, Aharon Ellis,
was gunned down at a bat mitzvah
party in Hadera. The Al Aqsa Martyrs
Brigades, linked to the Palestinian
Authority's ruling Fatah Party,
claimed responsibility for the act,
allegedly carried out by a P.A. secu-
rity officer.
The payment is a reversal of the
Palestinian Authority's previous years
of refusal to address lawsuits filed by
victims' families.
During the Bush administration, the
P.A. sought intervention from the exec-
utive branch, claiming that suits such
as the Knox case eventually would
bankrupt the moderate leadership as
it tries to exert itself over Hamas.
Former U.S. State Department
legal adviser John Bellinger told
Politico that P.A. Prime Minister
Salam Fayyad "has wanted to settle
these cases for a long time because
plaintiffs' efforts to attach Palestinian
assets to satisfy the judgments
threaten the financial stability of the
Palestinian government"
Both sides took steps to keep the
settlement amount secret, though
court papers mention "installment
payments!'
Stephen Flatow, whose daughter
Alisa's murder led to the Flatow
Amendment passed by Congress in
1996 that clarified the right to sue
over acts of foreign terrorism, was
displeased by the secrecy.
"People thinking of mounting a
terror attack don't know if they have
a major payment to be concerned
about:' Flatow told Politico. "It kind of
cheapens the action!'
Delay Pius Sainthood
Vatican City/JTA — Catholic schol-
ars from three countries have asked
Pope Benedict XVI in a private letter
to delay the proposed sainthood of
World War II Pope Pius XII.
The 18 scholars from the United
States, Germany and Australia
said that Catholic-Jewish relations
could be irreparably harmed if Pius
achieves sainthood before the histori-
cal record of his actions on behalf
