He was a physiatrist, special- izing in physical medicine. Always interested in numbers and the sciences, Dr. Cohen planned to become a physician from a very young age. After receiving his bachelor's degree in 1938 and his medical degree from the Ohio State University in 1942, he completed an internship at Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., in 1943. Shortly thereafter, he joined the United States Army to serve as a bat- talion surgeon and rose to the rank of captain. The majority of his service took place in Italy and near the end of the war in April 1945, Dr. Cohen par- ticipated in a Passover seder organized by the Jewish Brigade. This was an experience that he enjoyed describing throughout his life.
