F

rankel Jewish Academy host-
ed its first Quiz Bowl com-
petition in late January as 28
teams from eight area high schools
converged upon the West Bloomfield
school to match wits and out-answer
one another.
Questions came fast and furious
with topics careening from British
history to opera to literature and
back again. Having just read Jane Eyre
came in handy for FJA senior Andrew
Milgrom, netting the team points in
a bonus round. Junior Daniel Elkus,
team captain for the first game, swept
other bonus questions, setting the
Jaguars on course to win going away.
The FJA varsity roster included
Elkus, with fellow juniors Adam
Gorman, Danny Nemer and Brian
Waldman, along with Milgrom and
sophomore Noam Saper. The team

won two of three matches to finish 9-3
for the season and tied for second in
the InterCounty Quiz Bowl League's
Eastern Division.
Said team adviser Robert Miller,
"For our first-ever home meet, I was
especially pleased to see so many
students, teachers, administrators
and parents who came to show their
support for the kids. It really made a
difference and the atmosphere was
electric."
"It was shocking to see far more
people come to Quiz Bowl than we've
ever had at a tennis meet',' said Nemer,
who was also the Jaguars' No. 2 singles
player. Nemer, who correctly answered
a Bible question and whose strengths
are in math and pop culture, appreci-
ated the large turnout.
"It's nice to know everyone in our
school was so spirited." F -7,
