hat could have been an aver-
age Pistons game in Detroit
on Feb. 10 was an undeni-
ably thrilling experience for me and
15 other students from Michigan State
University's Hillel.
With tickets donated by Gabe
Neistein of the Pistons' community
relations department, we students
excitedly caravanned from East
Lansing to The Palace of Auburn Hills
to see Omri Casspi, the first Israeli in
history to play in the NBA.
The 21-year-old rookie is 6 feet, 9
inches and was born in Yavne. He is
a small forward for the Sacramento
Kings. He made his professional debut
at 17 with Maccabi Tel Aviv in 1995.
Although we showed pride for the
home team, we came prepared to wave

Israeli flags and to cheer for Casspi.
As halftime approached, we received
word that six members of our group
would be invited to join members from
Hillel Day School and NCSY to meet
Casspi following the game. This was a
memorable moment for us as we posed
for pictures and received autographs. The
exhilarating events left us on cloud nine.
We had mixed emotions driv-
ing back to East Lansing because
Sacramento beat the Pistons 103-97.
Not only was meeting an Israeli
basketball star an opportunity of a
lifetime, but also a wonderful chance to
meet new friends through MSU Hillel.
The Feb. 10 meet-and-greet with
Casspi was arranged through the
Jewish Community Relations Council of
Metropolitan Detroit and Yoav Raban,
Federation's community shaliach
(emmissary).
