Some quick takes from GM
Vice President Alan Taub
on topical issues affect-
ing the company:
• GM's bankruptcy: "It's
better to be out of it than
in it."
• U.S. government automo
tive bailout: "The gov-,
ernment made a smart
investment; they really
saved the auto industry.
The industry probably
would have been taken
down without govern-
ment assistance."
• Obama's auto advisers:
"They're knowledgeable
businessmen. If you bor-
row money, you're going
to have advisers."
• Recent GM executive
changes: "Restructuring
requires leadership
changes. We now have
the best executive team
in the industry."
• Has he met new chairman
and CEO Ed Whitacre?
"I knew [former CEOs]
Rick Wagoner and Fritz
Henderson, but I haven't
met Ed yet. I think he's
great for GM and I hope
to meet him soon."

recruited to join Ford in 1992. When
he told his wife, Gaye, also a Brooklyn
native, they were moving to Detroit, she
yelled,'What! We're moving from New
York to Detroit?' But she and the Taubs'
three daughters were real troopers, and
are enjoying their lives in Michigan.
Gaye is a nursery school teacher at
Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington
Hills; daughter Carrie Roth of West
Bloomfield is a teacher; Melissa Taub-
McNabb is a Belleville, Mich., social
worker, and Ariel Taub runs an online
wedding gown and veil business.
Coming to Dearborn, Taub managed
Ford's Materials Science Department,
then headed the company's North
American vehicle crash safety efforts,
and finally vehicle engineering for the
Lincoln brand.
"Testing cars and trucks for crash
safety is one of the most important
things you can do in this business','
he said, "and I became emotion-
ally attached to that job because of its
importance to safety. Technically, ifs a

real challenge, and I'm proud that we
had more vehicles with five-star safety
ratings than any other company in the
industry during my time at Ford. That
was a real highlight of my automotive
career"

Switch To GM
But, in 2001, it was time for Taub to
move on — to drive 24 miles from West
Bloomfield to the GM Tech Center in
Warren instead of the same distance
from his home to Ford's Research &
Engineering Center in Dearborn.
"When I heard from a GM recruiter, I
just couldn't resist switching to the big-
gest auto company of them all': he said.
"My passion always has been in techni-
cal development, and I envisioned GM
as the ultimate place to be. I'm happy
that GM is on the rise again."
Taub started as executive of director
of research and development as GM was
integrating R&D into product develop-
ment, then became a vice president.
"In the old structure, vehicles and
powertrains (engines and transmis-
sions) were engineered by two differ-
ent organizations, so R&D had to be
neutral;' he explained. "Now, Product
Development Engineering handles both;
the process is more streamlined."
Tom Stephens, GM's vice chairman of
Global Product Operations, calls Taub's
diverse experience and background "a
great benefit to our company; under his
leadership, I am confident our research
and development organization will
succeed in leading the industry in the
development of innovative technologies
and solutions."
For proprietary reasons, Taub
declined to say how many people work
under him or how much money GM
spends on R&D, other than to offer:
"It's a lot of people and a great deal of
money."

Worldwide Labs

Taub has staff in the seven science
laboratories he established around the
world since taking over R&D. "It's my
most important accomplishment so far
at GM', ) he said. "I really have two roles
now: overseeing the science labs and
coordinating GM's entire portfolio of
advanced technology work."
The labs are located in Tel Aviv,
Israel; Bangalore, India; Mainz-Kastel,
Germany; Shanghai, China; Honeoye,
N.Y.; Palo Alto, Calif.; and Warren. GM
also has a working relationship for R&D
with the Boeing Aircraft Co. in Malibu,
Calif.
"I visit the labs as much as I can and
I spend about 25-30 percent of my time
