very day is Valentine's
Day if you let your bed-
room do the romancing.
Using the finest and
most luxurious linens, bedspreads,
furniture and lighting, sprinkled
in with appropriate colors and
soft music, a couple's bedroom
can evoke warmth and love year
around.
"Romance is 12 months a year
and so is luxury ... it has no
season," says Linda Weissman,
co-owner of A Touch of Lace in
Bloomfield Hills, a seller of fine lin-
ens for the bedroom.
Despite the seemingly high cost
of the various elements, a roman-
tic bedroom can be created on
any size budget, interior designers
say.
Themed romantic decor bed-
rooms are hot these days, revolv-
ing around Victorian, French and
Tuscan concepts. The next step is
to integrate the right elements of
design to highlight the theme.
When it comes to color, com-
bining white with a warm or cool
accent color is popular. A warm
white wall could be accented with
a pale pink or dusty rose and
these accents, in turn, can be
incorporated into pillows, curtains,
bedding and rugs.
Conversely, rich reds, dark
blues, gold and chocolate hues
can create a stunning, romantic
feel, especially when including
variations of these colors in other
accessories.
Lighting creates a feeling of inti-
macy and warmth. Crystal chan-
deliers add to the romantic theme,
while smaller scale task lighting,
such as table lamps featuring drip-
ping crystal prisms, provide an
equally romantic spark.
"If someone asked me to design
a romantic bedroom, I think I
would bring to the party absolute
control over lighting, candlelight
and fireplace," says Bob Schaerer,
an interior designer and owner of
Schaerer Architextural Interiors in
Bloomfield Hills.
Elaine Fieldman and husband,
Mark Sims, must have been read-
ing Schaerer's mind. The Bloomfield
Hills couple has a bedroom in their
home on Turtle Lake that brings all
the elements together.
The room is decorated with warm
yellows and rustic reds while the
walls are made from Venetian plas-
ter, Fieldman says. "The tile around
tub is rustic and came from an old
church in England. It is antique,
very porous looking, or clayish."
