Students at Akiva Hebrew Day
School in Southfield learned
about the Torah portion Parshat
Beshalach "by making it come
to life," said Lisa Parshan, Early
Childhood Center director. "In
our classrooms, we not only listen
to the stories of the weekly Torah
portions, we also act them out."
In Rivkah Nachlas's Judaic
Studies kindergarten class, stu-

dents — helped by assistant
teachers Sharon Berry and Shellie
Kurtis — re-enacted the biblical
story of the splitting of the Red
Sea, allowing the Jewish people to
cross through it.
"If you walked into our school,
you would see a 'sea' laid out
on the ground," Parshan said of
the Jan. 29 program. "Complete
with waves, you would see the
children dipping their feet into
colored paints, then walking
through the Yam Suf (Sea of
Reeds) as the students sang the
beautiful song of the sea, "Az
Yashir Moshe."
