Playing Poker For A Cause

B'nai B'rith Texas hold'em aids relief efforts in quake-torn Haiti.

Steve Stein
Special to the Jewish News

T

he Pisgah/Zeiger B'nai B'rith
Chapter holds only one fundraiser.
It joins forces regularly with the
Bloch/Israel Chapter to sponsor a Texas
hold'em poker tournament.
Proceeds normally benefit Pisgah/Zeiger
and Bloch/Israel chapter activities and the
B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Region. But another
recipient was added for the Jan. 31 tourney.
Tournament organizers decided to donate
$200 to B'nai B'rith International's disaster
relief fund. It is supporting an emergency
response team from the Israeli relief organi-
zation IsraAID that is helping victims from
the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti.
"I announced the donation before the
tournament and everyone was very sup-
portive," said Pisgah/Zeiger president and
tournament spokesman Rick Sherline."It
felt good to help:'

The tournament, held at the Jewish
Community Center in West Bloomfield, also
featured a spirit of generosity.
The final four players in the 68-player field
decided to split their prize money (nearly 80
percent of the prize pool) equally because
their chip counts were so close.
Ivan Fenyvesi finished in first place, fol-
lowed by Amanda Fox, Bruce Sable and
Danny Rosenberg.
Fenyvesi and Fox are tournament regulars.
Sable has played in all nine of them, and
Rosenberg has missed just one. That was
no surprise."I'd say about 80 percent of our
68 players were repeat players, and about a
half-dozen haven't missed a tournament:'
Sherline said. "A heck of a compliment:'
The top eight players always qualify for
the final table and win cash. Defending tour-
nament champion Al Mudryk didn't win
again, but he finished seventh. There hasn't
been a repeat champion in the tournament.
Steve Roth was the first champion.

Other winners through the years have been
Andrea Korotkin Belen (September 2005),
Dan Monkman (February 2006), Matt
Katz (July 2006), Derek Einhorn and Ken
Korotkin (March 2007), Tim Buchman
(February 2008), Mitch Mandel (January
2009) and Mudryk (June 2009).

New Tourney Site
The 20th annual Hank
Greenberg Memorial Golf
Tournament will be held
at a new location: Oakland
Hills Country Club,
Bloomfield Township.
"It's a special year for
David Blatt
the tournament, so we
thought we'd do some-
thing very special;' said David Blatt, execu-
tive director of the Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation, which organizes the event.
Greenberg participants can play the North
or South course at Oakland Hills on June

21. The South course has been home to 16
major championships. Proceeds will benefit
prostate cancer research at the Barbara Ann
Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit.
