Jewish d il www.theJ EWISH N EWS . co m Grand Valley's Hillel is Growing by Carrie Subelsky Grand Rapids With each new class of students, the Jewish community is growing at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids — and so is our Hillel. About 200 Jewish students attend the university. Members look forward to the diverse events we plan and to meeting new GVSU Jewish students we hope to engage in Hillel. We've held several exciting educational and cultural programs this year as well as celebrations for the Jewish holidays. We also participate in events held by Temple Emanuel in Grand Rapids, including Mitzvah Day and High Holiday services. In April, we are looking forward to a Krav Maga event where students will learn a form of Israeli self-defense in a fun and safe manner. Our monthly Shabbat dinners give us the opportunity to get together to celebrate and catch up with one another. This year, we had a Taste of Israel Night and a Chanukah party at the Shabbat dinners. We also will host a Holocaust Memorial event on campus. Although our Hillel is a relatively small organization, it continues to grow and has a bright future. @ Carrie Subelsky of Farmington Hills is a sophomore at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids.
