Heartfelt Honors

Cardiology videos win peer acclaim.

Harriet Rotter,
former 12th-grade
teacher at Berkley
High School and an
attorney, received
a Crystal Apple
Award from the
Michigan State
Rotter
University College
of Education in East Lansing. She
was selected by members of the
College of Education's Leadership
Circle. Rotter taught government
and current affairs at Berkley from
1959-67 and also taught at Oakland
Community College from 1969-72.

Deanna Holtzman of Bloomfield
Hills, a Ph.D. and former president
of the Michigan Psychoanalytic
Institute in Farmington Hills, was
elected president of the Sigmund
Freud Archives. The long-serving
trustee is the first woman and first
Ph.D. to hold this position.

usan Bonin, owner of Susan
Bonin Productions LLC,
a West Bloomfield-based
video company, and two cardiologists
from Beaumont Hospitals in Royal
Oak each received an honor from the
International Davey Awards.
Bonin and Dr. Pamela Marcovitz,
director of the Beaumont Ministrelli
Women's Heart Center, received the
GOLD award for their video "How
Can This Be?" The video is a powerful
statement of how women's heart dis-
ease is the No. 1 cause of death, but yet
not as much research and awareness is
made about such a serious matter.
The women are collaborating on
a series of videos on all aspects of
women's heart issues. February is the
American Heart Association's GO RED
for Women month.

Commerce Costco's New
Kosher Meat Choices

The Commerce Costco at 3000
Commerce Crossing, Commerce
Township, has expanded its kosher
meat selection.
The following fresh kosher
products will make up the selec-
tion, subject to availability: Choice
Kosher First Cut Brisket, Choice

The second Davey went to Bonin
and Dr. Simon Dixon for their video
"Cardiology Promo." Their GOLD
award came in the Health and Fitness
category. Dixon is in charge of all
the cardiology live transmissions at
Beaumont; Bonin is the producer.
Cases are transmitted live around the
world for other physicians' viewing.
Beaumont is a forerunner in present-
ing live case studies. The video was
shown before the live transmissions.
The New York-based annual
International Davey Awards are
chosen from a pool of 4,000 entries
from small firms around the world.
Davey comes from the David and
Goliath story and recognizes smaller
companies that submit works with
big ideas.

kosher carryout service based at
the Fleischman Building in West

The Jewish Federation of Palm
Springs and Desert Area has named
Detroit native Bruce C. Landgarten
as its chief executive officer. Most
recently, he served as director of
the South Peninsula of the Jewish
Community Federation of San
Francisco, the Peninsula, Sonoma
and Marin Counties. Landgarten
began his career at the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit after graduating from Wayne
State University in Detroit.

Jacob Dunn of Bloomfield Hills
earned highest honors for the fall
semester at Skidmore College in
Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He is the son
of Steven and Amy Dunn.

Jackie Schwartz of Farmington
Hills, a sophomore at Michigan State
University in East Lansing, has qual-
ified for the Hasbara Fellowships
program through her service in the
pro-Israel and Jewish communities
on campus. She is the president of
the MSU Israel Culture Club. The
Hasbara program consists of three
weeks of intensive education, stra-
tegic touring and practical training
in Israel.

The Society of American Period
Furniture Makers awarded the 2010
Cartouche Award to Steven Lash of
West Bloomfield. The Cartouche is
bestowed annually to an individual
for outstanding achievement in
traditional furniture making. To

not making period furniture, Lash
practices orthodontics in West
Bloomfield.

Oren Goldenberg, a native of
Huntington Woods, is the editor of
Biles Stand, which has been accept-
ed for the Sundance Film Festival's
NEXT category. He received an
honors degree in filmmaking at the
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor
and created Our School Productions
and Cass Corridor films. He also
teaches and assists the EFEX proj-
ect.

Basil Williams, a senior at the
Frankel Jewish Academy in West
Bloomfield and son of Nadya and
Kenneth Williams of White Lake,
received a scholarship from the
Piety Hill chapter of the National
Society Daughters of the American
Revolution in Bnimingham. He won
the DAR Good Citizen Award for
his paper on "What is the Greatest
Challenge We Face in America
Today?" Williams wrote about the
divisive and corrosive effect par-
tisan politics are having on the
country's unity.

and Achievers Scholarship program
