Hospital Pioneer And Leader

otsford Hospital lost a longtime
leader with the death of one of
its founding physicians.
Dr. Ellis Siefer, D.O., of Farmington Hills,
died on Jan. 25, 2010, at age 92. He was the
chairman of the Department of Surgery
for Botsford's predecessor organization,
Zieger Hospital in Detroit from 1951 until
Botsford opened in 1965 when he became
chairman of the Department of Surgery
for the new hospital. He served in that
capacity for 18 years. In 1983, Dr. Siefer
became vice president of medical affairs
"Dr. Siefer's love of the osteopathic
profession and dedication to physician
training contributed significantly to
Botsford's reputation as a premiere pro-
gram for graduate medical education,"
said Paul LaCasse, D.O., president and
CEO, Botsford Health Care. "His early

Mrs. Chestnut is survived by her sons
and daughters-in-law, Julian and Faye
Chestnut of Illinois, Lonnie and Debi

and son-in-law, Bonnie Topper-Bricker
and Les Bricker of Northville; grandchil-
dren, Sarah and Eric Gutman, Michael
Topper and Eliza Curtis, Joshua and Carrie
Chestnut, Amanda Chestnut, Brad and
Carina Chestnut and Nicole Chestnut;
great-grandchildren, Riley, Lenah, Navah,
Analisa, Bradley, Nathan and Colin; sister
and brother-in-law, Florence and Paul
Rappaport; nephew and niece, Fred and
Irene Garon; other nieces and nephews;
also survived by Sandy Topper.
She was the beloved wife of the late
Ben Chestnut; loving sister of the late Ida
Goldman and the late Lou Kuzin; dear sis-
ter-in-law of the late Anita Kuzin.
Interment at Machpelah Cemetery.

The American College
of Osteopathic Surgeons
awarded him its Orel F.
Martin Medal for outstanding
contributions to osteopathic
medicine and the Purdue-
Frederick Distinguished
Service Award.
Dr. Siefer also served on
Botsford Hospital's board of directors
from 1960 until his death. The Ellis
Siefer, D.O., Surgical Services Pavilion at
Botsford is named in his honor.
