Crowd gathers for premiere of new
documentary on Jewish Detroit.

BY ROBIN SCHWARTZ

They settled in Detroit in the early
1800s with hopes and dreams of a
better life; they opened businesses,
started families, built synagogues and
laid the foundation for the Jewish
community we have in Metro Detroit
today. A new documentary chroni-
cling the historical, cultural and civic
contributions of our forefathers called
"Detroit Remember When: The
Jewish Community" premiered Dec. 9
on Detroit Public Television-Channel
56. More than 50 people gathered
at the station in Wixom for dinner
and the opportunity to view the first

broadcast. "The Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan was our sponsor
for the evening," said Jill Schubiner
of Birmingham, major gifts officer
for Detroit Public Television. "The
society's members also served as vol-
unteers answering calls from viewers
who made pledges and they matched
pledges [up to $10,000]." The 40-
minute film, produced by Academy
Award-winning filmmaker Sue Marx
and producer Allyson Rockwell, will
be rebroadcast on Detroit Public
Television on March 15 at 8 p.m.
