of Auburn Hills involves
cheering crowds and plenty
of action on the court. But on Jan.
27, there was something else to get
excited about.
About 200 people
attended the first Mentor
Night at the Palace.
Participants from nine
different Michigan men-
toring organizations serv-
ing hundreds of children
took part in a special
reception followed by a
Detroit Pistons basketball
game. The event, part
of National Mentoring
Month, was held to pro-
mote the value of men-
toring, recognize volunteers and give
everyone a fun night out.
"National research shows that con-
sistent, structured mentoring rela-
tionships can have a positive impact
on many risk factors for youth:' said

Michelle Malamis of Livonia, direc-
tor of Mentor Connection, a pro-
gram run by Jewish Family Service
of Metropolitan Detroit. "Children
are less likely to drink, use illegal
drugs or skip school, and
they're more trusting of
their parents or guardians
and more likely to attend
college."
According to the
Mentor Michigan Census
conducted in 2009, there
were 532 young people
in Wayne, Oakland and
Macomb counties alone
waiting to be matched
with mentors. Mentor
Connection has a wait-
ing list of 43 Oakland
County children ages 7-17, mostly
boys, waiting for a match. Most of
the children are missing a parental
role model due to divorce, illness
or incarceration. Oakland County
