Here Comes The Bride

When Flory Giurgiu arrived in
America from Romania, she knew two
words: "Hi" and "Bye." Since then, she
has not only taught herself English, but
also built a flourishing business. Flory's
Tailoring, in West Bloomfield, does
much more than hem pants (though
she gives that job as much detailed
attention as her biggest projects). Flory
understands fit, proportion, design and
style — thanks in part to her child-
hood interest in architecture, and to her
father, who when traveling on business
to Russia and Israel would send her
fashion magazines, from which Flory
would make her own patterns. It's
why her customers faithfully return for
everything they need. When Lauren
Reisen, a young bride-to-be and regular
customer, had become sufficiently over-
whelmed by trying on wedding gown
after wedding gown that just wasn't
right, she came back to Flory, her tai-
lor. "She came with me and my mom
to Haberman's Fabrics [in Royal Oak],
picked out all the fabrics, the layers,
the beads, everything I needed. She
measured me and made a mock version
of what it would look like, and I loved
it," says Lauren, who married Michael
Canner on Oct. 4, 2008, at Franklin
Hills Country Club. "Lauren brought
me a picture of a gown she liked, and
I said, 'OK, I can do that,'" says Flory,
who has had clients bring her pictures
of gowns by Prada and Valentino and
has amazed everyone — "Even myself!"
— with the results. "Lauren didn't
want anything too poufy; she wanted
it simple and clean, and her skin is so
white, like milk, we wanted to show
it off." The result, an elegant confec-
tion of layer upon layer of off-white
lace, embroidered rosettes and beads, is
stunning, as is the mantilla-style veil,
which Flory also created by adding an
edging of the lace used in the gown.
