Congressional Candidate
Farmington Hills — Maj. Andrew
"Rocky" Raczkowski, former majority
leader of the Michigan House and now
a candidate for the Ninth Congressional
District covering much of southern
Oakland County, will be featured at a
public meet-and-greet forum for the
Jewish community at 3:30 p.m. Sunday,
Jan. 31, at the Holocaust Memorial
Center, Farmington Hills.
Refreshments will be served.
Raczkowski will discuss Iran's growing
threat to Israel and the rest of the world.
Having just returned from his third tour
of duty where he was stationed in the
Horn of Africa, he also will address the
threats posed from Yemen by Al Qaida
on the Arabian Peninsula, Al Shabaab in
Somalia as well as Hamas and Hezbollah
in the Middle East.
He will discuss why it is imperative
— for America's security as well as
Israel's — that Israel maintain the right
to defend itself against terror regimes
and their proxies and not capitulate to
what he calls unprecedented pressure
from the U.S, the European Union and
the rest of the world. He champions as
Israel's capital an undivided Jerusalem.
He also will talk about the structural
reforms needed to invigorate Michigan's
economy and provide meaningful busi-
ness stimulus and job creation.
RSVP: (248) 661-8794 or via e-mail,
sbk613@gmail.com.

Bin Laden Threatens U.S.

JCC

Washington/JTA — An audio statement
allegedly from Osama bin Laden threat-
ens more attacks on U.S. targets "as long
as you maintain your support to Israel."
The statement was broadcast Sunday
on the Arabic-language Al Jazeera televi-
sion. Although the
voice on the tape has
not been verified, Al
Jazeera said it was
that of bin Laden.
In the statement,
bin Laden claimed
responsibility for the
attempted Christmas
Osama bin
Day bombing of a
Laden
Northwest Airlines
flight over Detroit.
The Al Qaida leader said he wanted
to deliver a message to America: "(T)hat
America should not dream of security
until we enjoy it as a reality in Palestine"
"It is not fair that you enjoy a good
life while our brothers in Gaza endure
the worst standard of living," bin Laden
said. "Therefore, God willing, our attacks
against you will continue as long as you
maintain your support to Israel:'

Israel May Adopt Orphans
Jerusalem/JTA — Israel's Social Affairs
Minister Isaac Herzog has asked his staff
to look into adopting Haitian children
who lost their parents in the devastating
earthquake on Jan. 12.
"We are proud that Israel aided the
horrible distress in Haiti, and we have a
moral obligation, as human beings, to
aid these children',' he told Israel Radio.
Herzog has asked Israel's envoy to the
Dominican Republic, Amos Radian, who
is also the consular official for Haiti, to
submit an official request regarding the
adoptions. Israel does not have an official
adoption protocol with Haiti.
Israel helps prospective adoptive
families by subsidizing the cost of inter-
national adoptions. The children are
converted to Judaism upon arrival.

Shoes For Quake Victims
A Southfield shoe store is collecting
footwear for earthquake victims in Haiti.
For a limited time, A Spring in Your Step
will collect gently worn footwear and/or
donations for the Soles4Souls charity.
There is a special need for work boots,
tennis, walking and children's shoes.
"We can use the shoes taking up space
in your closet to change the world one
pair at a time,' said Ellen Bushman, co-
owner with her sister Clare of A Spring
in Your Step. A monetary donation is
requested with each drop-off to help off-
set shipping charges.
Z-Coil/A Spring in Your Step is located
in Applegate Shopping Center, 29959
Northwestern Hwy, Southfield, (248)
350-3815. The shop will also give donors
a $15 gift certificate towards new Z-Coil
shoes at the store. Soles4Souls can be
reached at www.giveshoes.org .

Sign Back At Auschwitz
Krakow/JTA — The "Arbeit Macht Frei"
sign stolen from the memorial at the
Auschwitz death camp was returned.
Polish police returned the 16-foot metal
sign from the front gate of the camp dur-
ing a Jan. 21 ceremony in Krakow.
The sign, which means "work makes you
free,' was stolen Dec. 18 and recovered
across the country 72 hours later.
Experts will now try to restore the
sign, though it is not certain that it will
be returned to its place; a copy was
placed at the front gate immediately after
the theft. The stolen sign had been cut
into three pieces.
Five Polish men have been charged
with the theft, though a Swedish neo-
Nazi is suspected of ordering the crime.
Some 1.1 million people, including
about 1 million Jews, were murdered at
Auschwitz.
