Special to the Jewish News
I
t was a bang-up 25th anniversary
celebration for the Southfield Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Taskforce
Inc. For me, until now the only Jewish
member of the taskforce, it was more
than memorable. Jewish involvement
is increasing in the celebration as a
whole once more.
The second Jewish member of this
group, Geoffrey Berdy, is the education
director of Temple Emanu-El in Oak
Park. As a newcomer to the taskforce,
he brought some Emanu-El kids along
to help usher at the Jan. 18 event in
commemoration of the slain civil rights
leader. I am certain that he will prove to
be a valuable member of our group.
I became more aware of the
Southfield commemoration when my
late husband, Cantor Norman Rose of
Emanu-El, sang "The Star Spangled
Banner" at two of the events. I saw that
this would be a wonderful opportunity
for this Southfield Jew to bring more
diversity into the event, which this
year attracted 2,000 people.
I joined the taskforce and, as a result,
the Pavilion Program has become an
event that features exhibit tables of
various groups that grace our city. The
Judaica table is of special interest to
Jewish News readers. Presided over by
Marcia Ferstenfeld of Temple Emanu-El
for the third year in a row, it is a table
replete with exquisite pieces from the
Ferstenfeld home plus beautiful books.
As I walked along the exhibit area, I saw
people of all colors and faiths clustered
around the table.
Of course, being a diverse city
of 75,000 people, there were Native
American exhibits and a gorgeous table
presided over by Doris Gaston, dressed
in her beautiful Swedish costume. Also
featured was the Chaldean Association
table with wonderful artwork.
The Tastefest was supposed to have
had Southfield-based Jerusalem Pizza
among the samples, but unfortunately,
due to Brian Jacobs being over-extend-
ed as he opens a new venue, that didn't
happen. There's always next year!
Since I was onstage most of the
time, I had a bird's-eye view of the
audience reaction to the program.
Cantorial Soloist Penny Steyer
of Temple Shir Shalom in West
Bloomfield directed the Zamir Chorale
of Metropolitan Detroit in two lovely
pieces, one from liturgy and one song
she performed as a child at a memo-
rial service for Dr. King right after his
1968 assassination. There wasn't a dry
eye in the house.
I had the great pleasure of singing
"The Star Spangled Banner" with my
friend Barbara Seldon. Talk about har-
mony between a Christian and a Jew!
I am to be part of this organization.
I invite everyone in our community to
join us next year. ❑
