Judaism Workshops
The Corners, in partnership with
Temple Shir Shalom in West
Bloomfield, will sponsor a community
education series on "Judaism and
Psychotherapy"
Historically, Sigmund Freud was the
founder of contemporary psychother-
apy. His ideas and those of his follow-
ers were heavily influenced by Jewish
thought and practice. These workshops
explore and deepen our understanding
of the interface between Judaism and
mental healing.
On Tuesday, Jan. 26, Dr. Franklin
Sollars, a psychoanalyst and profes-
sor will present a lecture on "Sigmund
Freud and the Jewish Mystical
Tradition." Sollars will explore how
Jewish mystical thought shaped both
Freud's ideas and his theory of practice.
On Thursday, Feb. 25, Lynn Helper
Rosen and Rabbi Baruch Cohen will
present "The Maimodides Method:'
Cohen, director of the Birmingham-
Bloomfield Chai Center, has devel-
oped a self-help technique adopting
Maimonides' theory to contemporary
times. Halper Rosen, a psychoanalyst,
is one of Cohen's students and has
worked with the rabbi to make the
Maimonides Method a main stream
psychology.
Mussar is an Eastern European spiri-
tual tradition, from the 10th century,
which advocates moving closer to God
through ethical thought and action. It
recently was adopted into a contem-
porary system by Alan Moranis. Rabbi
Joshua Bennett is a spiritual leader
at Temple Israel and Julie August is a
vice president of the West Bloomfield
temple. Both are certified Mussar
teachers. On March 16, they will explain
and demonstrate this system based on
the 613 mitzvot and how to use it to
increase spiritual awareness.
The series concludes with an all-day
workshop conducted by Rabbi Howard
A. Addison. He has written two books
on the interface between Kabbalah and
the Eneagram, a personality system
which describes nine different patterns
of feeling, thinking and actions. The
workshop will teach participants how
to use the system for personal growth
and, for psychotherapists, how to work
with clients using the system for per-
sonal symptom removal and change.
Addison was a congregational rabbi
for 30 years and is now a professor
at Temple University and a founding
teacher of the Lev Shomea Institute for
training Jewish Spiritual Directors. The
workshop runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 9.
All programs will be at the Corners,
