is mesmerizing black-
and-white photographs
capture Hollywood
stars, stunning models
and breathtaking fashions, often in
unusual settings. The photography
of Richard Avedon, from the pages

of Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, The New
Yorker and other publications, still

makes people stop and stare today.
More than 300 people gathered
at the Detroit Institute
of Arts Dec. 10 for a
special "Artseen" event
hosted by Founders
Junior Council, the
young professionals
auxiliary of the DIA and
the American Institute
of Architects' emerging
professionals com-
mittee. Participants
enjoyed music, min-
gling, cocktails, hors
d'oeuvres and a pri-
vate showing of more
than 100 of Avedon's photographs
taken from 1944-2000. They were
on display at the museum from mid-
October through last weekend.
"It was amazing to see how
Avedon's style evolved from decade

to decade," said Scott Kaufman of
Huntington Woods, chief executive
officer of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit. "I especially
liked the shots of Parisian nightlife
from the 1950s."
Avedon (1923-2004) was born
in New York City to Jacob Avedon
and Anna Polansky, Russian Jewish
immigrants. He was raised amid
Manhattan's fashion industry; his
father owned a women's spe-
cialty shop and his mother's
family operated a dress
manufacturing business. He
grew up clipping images from
Vogue magazine and became
a photographer who revo-
lutionized his industry. He's
credited with turning fashion
photography into an art form.
"It's rare that you get to see
almost 60 years of an artist's
portfolio in one exhibit," said
Kaufman. "The DIA is Detroit
gem and many of its major
patrons are members of the Jewish
community. This speaks to the histori-
cal and ongoing role our community
plays in supporting arts and culture in
