Shifting Threats to Israel

Featuring

Ambassador
Dore Gold

President of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs

United Nations (1997-1999). Previously he served
as Foreign Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister of
Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu.

Rabbi Shimon Pelman with patients in Haiti.

The Federation movement spearhead-
ed a nearly $30 million aid effort for
victims of Hurricane Katrina in New
Orleans and the Gulf Coast, creating a
blueprint for collective disaster relief.
The Jewish Federations of North
America has also opened its own
disaster relief mailboxes when Jewish
communities were affected in other
disasters, such as fires that swept
across Southern California.
"Our hearts go out to the victims
of this terrible tragedy in a nation
already suffering from so many chal-
lenges," said Jerry Silverman, president
and CEO of The Jewish Federations of
North America.

Chabad

Chabad of the Caribbean along with
Chabad-Lubavitch of the Dominican
Republic — whose director, Rabbi
Shimon Pelman is currently in Haiti
— have coordinated to assist in relief
efforts.
Together they organized the shipment
of four large truckloads of kosher
food, water and medical supplies
delivered to Haiti.
Chabad rabbinical students have
gathered at the Chabad House in the
Dominican Republic to support teams
of relief workers en route to Haiti, less
than 160 miles away.
Rabbi Pelman has worked to locate
a handful of Jewish families and visit-
ing Israelis and contact members of a
small Israeli community in Haiti.
"Chabad is working hard to provide
any kind of assistance we can to the
people of Haiti, including material
and emotional support:' said former
Detroiter Levi Stein of Chabad of
Puerto Rico.

MAZON
MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger
launched an Emergency Haiti Fund
via http://mazon.org/go/helphaiti.
"There is still much more to do.
One of our longtime partners in the
region reports that many of their
agricultural developments have been
destroyed by the quake and after-
shocks. Looking ahead, we pledge
to rebuild sustainable farming and
nutrition programs and keep Haitians
healthy after emergency teams have
left. This long-term focus has worked
in New Orleans after Hurricane
Katrina and it will work in Haiti:' said
Detroiter Joel E. Jacob, national chair
of Los Angeles-based MAZON (www.
mazon.org).
