Coming Together from page 18
since America declared Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr.'s birthday a federal
holiday in 1983: "We have had the
election of America's first African
American president, a less than open-
minded Congress and a country that
led this nation into two wars search-
ing for weapons of mass destruction
and looking for a third. Detroit had
the state take over the school system
— take it over, give it back and take
it again."
He added, "Black Americans had the
million man march; the million sister
march. The Klan marched. Angry par-
ents marched. Folks with health care
marched and our economy marched
out of us. Proposal 2 [the 2006 state
constitutional amendment banning
certain forms of affirmative action]
showed us that the angry white male
is getting angrier. And I am sick and
tired of being sick and tired.
"No, Dr. King, things are not the
way they used to be. I cannot say for
sure, but I can imagine that if you
could come back and see what we
have done to this legacy, you would be
very disappointed."
Looking Forward
In closing, Rabbi Krakoff asked, "For
what issues are am I — are we — will-
ing to stand up and fight? Indeed, there
are plenty of urgent needs in our own
community and around the world,
especially now in the face of genocide,
terrorism and war. And so, I pray. I pray
that we can draw inspiration from the
courage of Dr. King, who sacrificed
his very life to articulate and defend
urgent needs of this time. As for us,
may we not shy away from continuing
Dr. King's work in our day, raising the
moral compass of this great country
and working unconditionally to end the
suffering and injustice that continues to
surround us."
Rev. Oscar King closed by imploring
the audience to realize common goals.
"Unless we preach agape love, unless
we preach deliverance to all of the
captives, preach the good news to the
poor and health to the broken-hearted,
unless you and I stand on our same-
ness instead of our differences, the great
American dream that Dr. King preached
about and died for will become the
great American nightmare."
