o help people learn
about new and
interesting
healthy food products,
Gail Posner R.D.,
M.S., nutritionist
(www.gailponser.
corn), leads people
on grocery store
tours.
Starting in January
(just in time to help
people get started on their
New Year's resolutions), even the
most nutrition savvy participant
can stroll through those familiar
aisles and pick up new and practi-
cal information.
As you walk with Posner, she
explains how to evaluate the thou-
sands of products, ingredients and
health claims.
"It's a fun way
to incorporate
healthier foods
into your diet or
improve the nutri-
tion intake for
your family," she
says. "The hour
goes really quickly
and Hiller's
Markets is happy for me to do it
because it exposes their customers
to new foods that they might have
been reluctant to try."
Posner says it's kind of like
"edutainment."
Walking though the store and
seeing the products can be much
more fun than a lecture. Most tour
participants end up buying one
or more of the products that we
discuss. In addition, they go home
with recipes and handouts that help
them solve the "what's for dinner"
dilemma.
Posner started doing the grocery
store tours at Hiller's Markets 20
years ago. They have become very
popular, not only with her weight
loss clients, but also with people
controlling diabetes, high blood
pressure and high cholesterol.
Posner says that each tour is
different. She starts each tour by
asking the members what they

would like to include and away they
go. Posner takes one cart with her
for the entire group and the par-
ticipants pile in the groceries they
enjoyed and want to buy at the end
of the tour.
In the bread aisle, where Posner
teaches her group that "wheat"
bread is not necessarily the same
as "whole wheat" bread. She shows
them how to find the ingredients in
the label and how to make sure that
you are getting 100-percent whole
grain products. The tour members
all find their favorite bread and are
usually surprised to learn there are
better choices.
Posner says she has taken clients
one-on-one down the grocery store
isle, providing individualized guid-
ance. She says, "It hasn't happened
yet, but I am sure that it is only a
matter of time until someone hires
me for a 'Grocery Store Party' for
their friends or family."
