2070 LAST MANCE Nominations Due Jan. 18 --ELCH- 111 11 - EIGHTY The Tikkun Olam Award WHAT: Eight Over Eighty — The Tikkun Olam Award Eight Over Eighty is an annual event at Jewish Senior Life of Metropolitan Detroit that honors eight senior adults, eighty years or older, who have dedicated their time, talents and lives to our community. MLK Day Events in West Bloomfield, Southfield and Detroit. U nited We Walk, an annual event in West Bloomfield where students, residents and community leaders come together to celebrate the life and contributions of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held Sunday, Jan. 17. The walk, pro- gram, dialogues and candlelight vigil will be at West Bloomfield High School. This year marks the 16th anniversa- ry of this community-based multicul- tural celebration. The official obser- vance of King's birthday is Monday, Jan. 18, which is being promoted as a day of community service. The Peace Walk begins at 3 p.m. along Orchard Lake Road. Students of all ages, adults and organizations are encouraged to create banners to carry that celebrate "United We Can." Participants will be provided hot bev- erages and a light lunch. Free parking is available at the high school. This year's button for the event is designed by WBHS student David Kakos. Student participation includes "written expression" competitions, with winners reading their work at the program. Entertainment will be pro- vided by student groups. "We are very proud that West Bloomfield has been the catalyst for a number of surrounding communities to start their own celebrations of MLK day,' said Hertha Woodruff, a founding member of United We Walk. Southfield Celebration Southfield will host its 25th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Peace Walk Celebration beginning at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18, at Hope United Methodist Church, 26275 Northwestern Highway. The walk begins at 10:15 a.m. An 11 a.m. program at the Southfield Pavilion, located in the Southfield Municipal Complex, 26000 Evergreen Road, will feature remarks from Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence, civil rights activist the Rev. Dr. Jesse Douglas and Kwame L. Abernathy, son of the late civil rights leader Dr. Ralph D. Abernathy. Exhibits will include one by Temple Emanu-El, Oak Park. The program will feature musi- cal performances from the Zamir Chorale of Metropolitan Detroit led by Cantorial Solist Penny Steyer of Temple Shir Shalom in West Bloomfield, the United Voices of Detroit and the Southfield-Lathurp High School Madrigals as well as dance performances by the Sun- mi Choi Dancers, Hindu Temple Rhythms and North American Indian Association of Detroit Dance Troupe. The MLK Community Service Award winner will be honored and the Liberty Bell will be rung by the Southfield Special Olympics Team. The Celebration of Diversity Taste Fest will follow. Answering Israel's Critics The Charge Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stone provided written praise on the book jacket of a recent publication that accused Israel of perpetrating a merciless massacre and of willfully murdering civilians en masse in Gaza in 2008. The Answer Gahr Stone retreated from his endorsement of the book and its claims.
