share before you can call their prog-
nosis good. Ford is in the catbird
seat. They have the best lineup
— and they have the advantage of
Wall Street's confidence. The U.S.
companies are positioned for profit
and growth. There is a lot of prom-
ise, but challenges also.

WITH THE RISING INTER-
EST IN ELECTRIC VEHI-
CLES, IS THERE ROOM FOR
SOME OF THE SMALLER
MANUFACTURERS LIKE
TESLA OR CHINAS BYD?
Well, there is definitely a future for
electric vehicles here. The obstacle
for those companies is being able
to meet the café fuel standards.
Tiny companies like those, or like
Aptera, are big on ideas, big with
investors, but they don't have the
scale to compete. They're more
likely to be limited to niche status
for some time. Unless someone
buys them out, which I could see
happening for someone like Tesla.

PART OFYOUR JOB AS AN
ANALYST IS TO CONLNIUNI-
CAFE SOMETIMES-HARSH
MARKET REALITIES TO
AUTO COMPANIES. DO YOU
FIND IT CHALLENGING TO
BE CRITICAL OF LOCAL
CAR. MANUFACTURERS AND
THEIR BUSINESS PRAC-
TICES?
No, I don't. So many people suf-
fered because they didn't look at
their businesses with a critical eye.
That kind of introspection is a
necessary and healthy part of any
success in the industry, and, now if
you have constructive criticism to
give, it's viewed as valuable input
and is put to good use.

WHAT KT\TD OF CAR D
YOU DRIVE?

I drive all of them — that's as spe-
cific as I'll get.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN
YOU'RE NOT MEETING
THOSE 7 A.M. DEADLENES?

I like to travel. I'm into motor-
cycles. And I home-brew my own
beer. It's not cost effective, but the
quality is outstanding. IF
