Frank Lanzkron-Tamarazo
was a man on a mission
— to find the perfect cup of cof-
fee. Lanzkron-Tamarazo's mission
became a part-time career selling
fresh roasted coffee wholesale. He
sold to friends and family at first,
gaining a good name through word
of mouth.
Three years ago, he formed
Chazzano LLC, named from the
Hebrew word chaz-
zan, or cantor. He
learned everything
he could about cof-
fee-growing regions,
coffee beans, proper
roasting techniques
and how coffee
should be served. His
goal was to open the
perfect coffee-roasting business. He
did all this while working 70 hours
per week as a cantor at synagogues
in New Jersey and Illinois.
Since May 2007, Lanzkron-
Tamarazo, his wife, Lisa, and chil-
dren Max, 9, Doris, 6, and Nicoletta,
4, have lived in Farmington Hills,
where he is spiritual adviser of
Congregation Hava Nashira in
Farmington Hills.
He opened Chazzano Coffee
Roasters this October in Ferndale.
The 1,200-square-foot coffee roast-
ing and retail location cost approxi-
mately $100,000 to build out and
equip. The new business has created
five jobs and could create an addi-
tional five jobs before year's end.
"Many people have asked me why
I chose Ferndale, particularly this
part of the city, to open a specialty
coffee-roasting and retail business:'
Lanzkron-Tamarazo says. "My pat
answer is that Ferndale is a hot and
exciting town, much like Royal Oak
several years ago. It is populated
with a lot of young people and hard-
working middle-class
people. The reaction
so far has been great.
"This was the per-
fect location. There is
a stoplight in front of
my shop and I have
15 parking spots
for my customers. I
wanted to create a
networking hub where other busi-
ness people and owners would have
a place to meet new people over a
great cup of coffee. When you have
a great cup of coffee in front of you,
you tend to spend more time getting
to know the person in front of you."
To bring the experience closer and
to educate customers, Lanzkron-
Tamarazo decided to have the roast-
er visible so customers could see the
process and ask questions.
